Toronto "overnight" street parking

I've recently moved into a condo that unfortunately doesn't have sufficient visitor parking spots and always seem to be taken no matter what time of the day it is. Although, I do have an underground parking spot it would be nice to have at least one additional spot in case someone comes down to visit. I've looked in the area for a spot that might be for rent but having no luck.

I then turned to street parking and noticed they're are plenty of spots since most homes in the area have garages. Once I started searching the toronto.com site it seems lie a big PITA to get a street permit. Now my motorcycle is still registered at my parents place and I as thinking of having the address transfered to my current address and then applying for a free street permit and using this on a car the odd time someone comes over to visit. Any idea if the motorcycle permits vary from the car permits? Is there anything that distinguishes the 2? TIA!

Motorcycle permits are free, it was pretty painless back when I got one last year. They even automatically signed me up for one renewal so I didn't have to worry about it for a year. The car permits are stickers that go on your windshield, but the motorcycle permits are usually laminated and they give you a zip tie.

I thought street parking permits were only for areas where house didn't have garages or there were insufficient off street spots.

Is there any difference between the two as far as how they look? Was wondering if a parking meter maid would be able to differentiate between the two. I think even a car permit can be laminated so it can be used for different cars but not too sure.

Yes and no. Plenty of areas in Toronto with garages still have street parking as more than one person in the household might be required to park on the street. In my case there seems to be plenty of street parking in the area.

Each time I park my bike on the street overnight in toronto... it gets knocked down. I started parking on the sidewalk.

Sorry, i searched and STILL dont understand!!!!

sorry thought on this site it would be assumed i was talking about a motorcycle...and whether they would be exempt

wouldnt a printed temporary permit fall under the same category as...

it blew off, was stolen, couldnt be secured etc

Yes, it would be in that same category. That would be the category in which they ticket you, then tell you that you have to prove that you made the purchase in order to have the ticket stayed.

thank rob for your patience with me.
i get it now.
In my situation it wouldnt work unless i actually bought the temp ticket online and had a record proving i did.
for me i was hoping i could get away without buying the temp ticket but alas i would be screwed without buying the temp ticket...and having the e-record as proof.
thanks for helping me make sense of this.

I have a car parking permit and it's got my licence plate no., the street it's for and a barcode. You move it to another vehicle and you get a ticket - I know this.
