Hi all,

I do have someone to help me who has worked on his own bikes for years. I just want to make sure I have all the things I need lined up before I bug him to help me.

From what I can tell so far I need...

Valve Shim Tool:

Feeler gauge to check the clearances:

Then valve shims:

My main question(s) is/are if I need anything else other than these items. Also, there are several different feeler gauges I have seen. Is there a range that I should look for? Also, shims come in a myriad of sizes. Looking on ebay there are different lots on sale with different ranges of sizes.

The bike in question is a 1981 CB 750 Custom.

Thanks in advance for the help/feedback...

You need to measure the valve clearances first, then determine the thickness of your new shims. You may be able to reuse some of your existing shims if they fit the measurement needed on one of the other valves. It really isn't hard, just check and double check your math. The first time I did it, all my math was backwards, bought all new shims that didn't fit. Lol

Check, double check and then triple check the cam positions.

Case of beer. Leave in fridge to chill and enjoy after you button everything back up.

I wonder if I should to a chance and snag some shims off of ebay or just open it up and see what the clearances are first?

Check what you need first. I found I normally only needed to buy one or two shims.

I think I am comfortable going in and checking it out. Then will check with some folks to see which size shim(s) I will need.

Going to try this on my own... Worked well with the starter clutch and instrument light projects...

Anyone have a suggestion on a good set of feeler gauges to buy? Need to do a check on my 83 gs1100 engine soon.

And make sure you don't mix up your units of measurement... can happen if you use a mysteriously marked set of feeler gauges that seem suspiciously precise

I've heard some shops would swap shims. Don't know how true
