Tire Tread Question from a Newbie

Hi guys,

I just bought my first bike (84' Honda CM 250) and I had a quick question about the tires. I am not sure whether the tires I have now are too worn out to be safe or if they will be ok for at least this season. I have included the pictures below, so hopefully I will get a helpful response.

P.S - The bike still needs to be saftied. Once again I don't know yet if I will need to purchase new tires/tire or if these will pass safety. Back and front are both included below.

Thanks.

Replace them. Cracks on the inside of the tread are a dead give away that the tires are too old.

^^ This.

There's a date code printed on the sidewall of the tire, would be interesting to see how old they are ;)

Some (most?) shops will pass that at your safety check, as long as tread depth is sufficient.

+1
They might pass safety if the thread depth is enough, but if they are old and hard you will want to replace them for your own safety.

As other said replace. Those appear to be close to end of life. They may squeak by a safety but I wouldn't want to ride on them.

Bought a first bike? Tires are questionable? Don't question it - REPLACE!!! You ride a motorcycle now. It only has 2 tires instead of 4 and those two tires don't even have the contact patch area of just 1 car tire.

Not listening to my own advice, I rode my first season with tires that ideally should have been replaced on the Ninja500r. This season I put on new Pirelli Sport Demons and I knew it was going to be good. Far more confidence inspiring through turns, etc..

I could tell without even enlarging your thumbnails that those tires are old and need replacing.

I would think that center groove in picture #4 should have slots on it just like the rest of the treads on either side.
My vote is strongly for replace as well. Newer tires will work better, those look stiff.

Depends on how much you value your safety :)
