Tire Sizes

Hey guys,

Was looking at buying new tires,

My Tire Sizes are:

120/70
180/55

And my buddy is selling a set that is.

120/65
180/55

The back tire matches perfectly, I was wondering if it made a difference if the (120/70) is smaller on the second number.

i dont really have a clue what the numbers mean any help would be appreciated

Hey Parrah,

The numbers on the tire represent the size and width of the tire, meaning the 120 means the width of the tire with the 65 means the height of the side wall, so basicly the the 65 is a little smaller than the 70 and the handling you may notice to be slightly different..

not sure if the 65 will fit on your 70.

You bike run on tires, I would spend a few extra bucks and get the proper set that matches your bike.

The profile height is 65% of the tire's width..in this case, 65% of 120mm.

Stock height of tire is 70% if the 120mm.
The tire will be a little shorter, thus lowering the front of the bike a tiny bit. This will affect turn in, steering effort, and stability. The geometery of the bike will become a little bit more aggressive, sacrificing a little bit of high speed stability, in exchange for quicker turn in and less steering effort.

While we're on this topic, what are the advantages/disadvantages of installing a 190 rear instead of the stock 180 size?

Possibly better stability with a 190 /50....at the cost of slower turn in and less nimble bike.
Larger carcass area to dissipate heat into with a 190/50 or 190/55..maybe leading to longer tire life or less overheating.
Larger contact patch at max lean with a 190/55.
Higher tire cost with a 190/50 and 190/55
Heavier rotating wheel assembly with the larger 190 sized tires than it would be with the same model of tire in a 180 size
