M5s are good for a newb track rider. Quick warm up (2 laps at tmp). No warmers needed and last about 12 track days.

This should make it easier for people to answer your questions.

Shinko slicks would be fine if you were trying to crash is that what you are trying to do?

So you have used shinko slicks?
Thought about it but I can crash well enough on Pirelli's did a bunch of research last year and the Shinko slick are not know to be much good, unless you are drag racing then they are fine.

I assume you don't have tire warmers? Read the threads about heat cycles and stiff compounds on slicks.

I run the bridgestone S20's, no warmers. Heat up quick, stick like glue. I did four track days on them at TMP and they still look good :)

I got em from Pete's: http://www.petes-superbike.com/english/s-20-click-on-picture-for-prices.html

Dunlop Q2's didn't disappoint me at the end of last season, but I was sliding in turns. So I decided next season I'll be on warmers and just got me a set of Bridgestone slicks take offs, used once for 16 laps I believe, I expect to see a major difference! Not only from the slicks but also the more aggressive racing profile of the tires. But what the others said---depends on you and how hard you ride it. Street tires seem to be more than enough for many people, and suicidal for others.

Get yourself a set of good dot race tires from one of the vendors that actually have reps that are involved in racing. Dunlop, bridgstone etc . They can answer questions help you out. It doesn't matter which brand because it will be awhile before you will actually be able to tell the difference. You will have other things to concentrate on for a while.
As far as the Shinko tires are concerned, they are on sale for $150 a set for a reason. You get what you pay for. I've only seen the Shinko slicks being used at the track once and he was not having a good time. There is just no comparison to Shinko and what Bridgstone, Dunlop, Michelin or Pirelli put out.

Also there will be great deals on tires at the coming bike show. You can talk to the reps and see what is what.

That, and I also heard slicks would last slightly longer, because they don't have the grooves that catch on the road. Of course, you shouldn't run slicks without warmers as you won't be able to bring the temp up, which could also be the case for DOT race. That said, some people run them without warmers, but tires are not nearly as effective, don't last long (too many heat cycles, cold tearing, etc.).. On higher end street tires---you can more so go without warmers.

street tires on the more aggressive side are fine. e.g Metzeller M3, Pirelli diablo rosso corsas, dunlop Q2's. I'm not a michelin or bridgstone fan, but they have options as well. Personally I really like the Q2's for entry level track performance. Q2's are better if its hot, DRC's a little better if its cold IMO, but in terms of value, I'd go with the Q2's hands down, they are a good margin less than the DRC's. You can ride them for quite a while, until your mid-level red group, then you'll need something a bit more. You don't need warmers on street tires, but to prevent cold tearing, cold tire crashes, and not wasting 2 laps every session warming them up, they are a good idea. Most don't start out with them, usually something people buy down the road.

I don't know anyone who rides shinko's at the track. They are cheap because they are older technology, significant advancements have been made since. Some of the drag guys use them, but I would not recommend that route for your purpose.

On the topic of tires. Anyone heard or seen any good deals on track rubber(DOT or Slick) in the off-season? Would be nice to pick up a couple sets for a good price now. :)

I asked him what his name was, and he said Dave, and I said dave what (expecting his last name), and he said dave the cripple! He introduces himself as that. Search Dave the Cripple in the gtam search box up there, check out all the threads and posts created by HIM.
