Tinted Windscreen and Safety Cert. Requirements

Hey guys,
I've been asking around about this but no one seems to know the answer 'for sure'. I need to get my bike safetied this spring and I'm wondering if my tinted windscreen is going to cause me problems.

This is what I've found so far:
(10) Where the motorcycle is fitted with a windshield,

(a) the windshield shall be secure in its attachment to the vehicle;

(b) the windshield shall not be crazed, clouded, fogged or damaged, so as to materially impair the operator’s vision;

(c) any manufacturer’s marking on the windshield shall be AS1, AS6 or AS10; and

(d) no material that obstructs the operator’s view of the highway or an intersecting highway shall be fitted on the windshield.

I'm just not sure what their definition of 'crazed' is or whether it would be considered to materially impair the operator's vision. The windscreen is tinted very dark black (5%).

your paranoid. I have never had a bike fail due to the tinted windscreen.

If it came that way and has the markings DOT listed. Good to go lol

#146 - ramp tramp to track day tramp.

Thanks, guess I'll just try my luck and see how it goes....I'm just really trying to avoid having to go back and forth just to get a safety cert.

The HID's should be more of a concern than your windshield...

No mudguard would fail too but they usually don't care.

Take it off for the safety, put it back on after. Legal and free

^ Truth. A motorcycle is not required to have a windshield. IF it has a windshield, it has to meet the requirements (and almost all aftermarket windshields won't have the required AS... markings). But it doesn't need a windshield at all. So take it off!

Go to CT they won't know and pass it.

lol this is true. Based on what I've witnessed, you could take a bike with no engine to CT and it'd pass.

My last two bikes had dark tinted wind screens and they both passed without mention

Never heard of anyone failing due to this. If you become the first, I can pretty much guarantee you taking it to any other mechanic in the city will fix the problem.

Good to know, I think I'll just take it to CT, they seem to be the most likely to pass it without too many problems. Frekeyguy, I don't think having HIDs on the bike will cause a problem, as far as I know they aren't illegal?

CT techs arnt bike people (most). But will be paid 1.5 hours to safety your bike. If you watch, they will not check anything but lights, brake pads, and maybe tires. The front end won't be lifted, head bearings won't be checked and same with wheel bearings. Its just quick easy money for them.

Yea heed the above warning. If you just want a pass then go ahead but don't assume that anything has actually been checked. I've stood next to them during a safety cert and all they did was check the lights and horn.

Also, CT generally way overcharges for a safety cert. I've personally been charged as high as $130 (paid it cause I was impatient). The one at Rylander charged me a more reasonable $65 for my previous bike.

Thanks for the head's up, you would think that because it's a chain/dept. store that the charge for just about anything would be standard across the board? We have two here in town and I'm sure a few in Cambridge and KW so I'll call around to find out before I go.

Aren't illegal unless you don't have projectors or have a color tone to it (pink, red, green, purple, some shades of blue, etc).
