Tim Horton's Layoffs....

And here we go again! Canadian (US Owned I guess for the last few years) company gets taken over...and a few months later layoffs come with ZERO interference from the Canadian gov't....sorry they said they can't lay off more than 20% of the workforce....well that's great for those 20% I guess...

It's a damn shame that we allow international organizations to come in here, buy out our Canadian companies and nothing happens and it's business as usual.

I feel for these 350 employees that were laid off this week because I've been there before....worked for a good Canadian firm...bought out by a US company....then they shut us down and sold us off to a Chinese firm....fun!

I guess there's no such thing as safe employment anymore...we're all at the whims of the shareholders...unless of course you run your own ship like some of the members here! Kudos to them for doing their own thing!

it sucks, but we're in a global economy now, and these things will happen.....

I feel for these people. I got "rationalized" along with other senior managers. I switched careers after this and although I do not make the money I used to at least I have a stable gig now and I like my job. I hope things work out for all of these folks. With Target, Sony, Mexx, Tims etc this is a significant blow to the Canadian and local economies.

There has been no such thing as safe employment for about the entire time I've been alive

go work for a body shop, if you are good, you will never be unemployed...

Forwarding this to the 350 laid off Tim's employees now

Believe it or not this is why I got my AZ licence. I did not want to be in my 50s and unable to find work. Problem was I did not really enjoy driving a truck that much. I ended up getting my B licence and now drive a transit bus. If things went south I could find work tomorrow with my AZ and FAST card.

I am a college and University grad but a humanities degree is not worth much if you do not get into a B Ed. program like me. I needed some kind of "hard" skill which was in demand.

A career in trades is certainly something to consider for a young person if they are not interested in Engineering or IT work.

Is anyone really surprised by any of this? Writing was on the wall the moment they stopped baking their goods and just re heating bagels made 4 weeks ago.

Well, the quality of the product is probably not going to improve under an umbrella with Burger King. Burger King has to be one of the worst quality fast food restaurants around.

I really don't understand the Timmy's loyalty. I very rarely go anymore, and recently its only because I got a $10 Tim Card for Christmas.

The only thing I ever really liked at Tim Hortons was their Chili Combo.

I feel bad for anybody out of work. Tims head office had the notorious 30yr growth problem where every manager hired one or two assistants, then the assistants got assistants and now the supervisors out number the worker bees. And then you merge (bought out ) with a company that brings on their own collection of managers and assistants and the big broom has to come through the place.

3G group and burger king and now Tims are not about great burgers or coffee and cupcakes. Its about making lots and lots of money, sorry, those hometown proud ads are just marketing

No! Say it ain't so! I hope this trend doesn't catch on. That might have a net negative impact on society as a whole.

Well, he's not completely wrong.

Yes, all companies are here to make a profit but some believe in some measure of social responsibility while others do not. Not all capitalists are equal.

Some companies try to maximize profit by cutting labor and forcing the current employees to do more. They don't realize that these cuts harms performance and hurt customer based and they get frustrated and lose patience. The gains are usually short term as opposed to the long-term greed of the investor. They really don't care about the company as much as the founders who started it. They usually run these companies into the ground.

Social responsibility now means not grinding the workers and customers into the ground? It seems to be all about winners and losers now. It probably always was but it wasn't as blatant. I'm imagining every business has a war room.

There is a very low employee turnover rate with my current employer but our work environment is not very "north american"
