i bought a cargo van yesterday together with my partner,i was shopping around for cheaper insurance,im currently with statefarm, but there rates are pissin me off,i was gonna leave the van on the dealer lot until monday so i get some quotes from different insurance company's anyways my partner i work with decides to take the van for a test drive this morning from the dealers lot knowing the van didnt have insurance, the small car dealer attached new plates on the van this morning and they to knew there was no insurance on the vehicle, they should have put the dealer plate back on the van prior to the test drive,ok the dilemma i have is during the test drive my partner was stopped by the police and ticketed with not producing an insurance card this happened at 10 am this morning, after hearing this news i phoned rite away and put insurance on the vehicle at around 1pm,my question is will i have any problems from this or will it just be my partner who was driving the vehicle facing the music

Usually state farm insurance has the "feature" that you can drive other vehicles under your current insurance slip. Check what your partner insurance covered. Then take the paperwork to court.

Don't take this lightly, missing the ins slip is carries just as much penalty as speeding.

I could be wrong, but I think there is one ticket for failure to show insurance slip, and a second for failure to have insurance. The second being much worse, but the first is just a $100 fine or so. Either way, I can't imagine that anyone but the ticketed driver would be in trouble.

Your partners going to take all the heat. He was driving the vehicle and there his responsibility to ensure everything is in order (insurance, registration, etc..) with said vehicle regardless of whose name it's in. I know because I was pulled over in a friends car and when I went to get the insurance and reg and it wasn't in the car. I ended up with the two tickets for fail to provide insurance slip and fail to provide proof of registration. Of course the car was actually insured and all I did was go into the station the next day provide the documents and it was all cleared up.

Did he get a summons to appear in court or just a $65 fail to provide insurance slip ticket. If it's the latter I'd just pay the ticket and be thankful you didn't get dinged for driving without insurance. Even if you get a slip tomorrow it will actually show that your partner was in fact operating the car without insurance and that could lead to bigger issues.

they stopped him at 9am this morning the van officially had no insurance it wasnt brought to my attention till 12pm i phoned and got insurance at 130pm a temporary liabilty slip was emailed to me at 145pm,whats pisses me off is the small corner dealer let him test drive the van knowing the van had no insurance, why didnt they take the new plates off they recieved from ministry in my name and put there dealer plate on for the test drive, this is wacked

how can they have plates issued with no insurance?

If you get a "no insurance" fine, I beleive it is a $5k fine

If there was no insurance on the van, be very happy that YOU didn't get a ticket for that, because the vehicle owner is eligible for that ticket regardless who was driving at the time unless that person was operating the vehicle without your permission.

if they ticket me as well im gonna be slammin me partner what a goof, the dealer should be liable as well they should have put there dealer plate on the vehicle for the test drive instead of putting the new tags in my name on the van and allowing him to take it off the lot knowing the van wasnt insured

The question is did you get a 5k no insurance ticket or just a $65 failure to have slip on you? If its just the $65 then its not that serious and unlike what someone else said, it doesnt carry a penalty such as speeding. Its nxt to nothing and wouldnt worry about it.
Sometimes you could get insurance in it now, and get them to back date it or something if your that worried about it

If the van had already been transferred into your name, the dealer really wouldn't have much say or liability in what you and your partner do with it regardless of insurance status.

+1, the failure to provide insurance slip didnt count against my "ticket count" last time my insurance checked. they told me i was clear, just pay the damn fine and let it go away.

If it's failure to show slip, and you put insurance on it the same day....it doesn't show what time insurance was placed on the vehicle. Take it to court, tell the judge your partner had your van and did not know where the slip was and show them your slip....they'll even void the $65 fine with a warning.

Sorry for jacking the thread, but i have a similar question. Right now i activated my insurance but it starts in june, so i went and got a new sticker for my plate which expires next year. I have an old insurance slip that the company sent me for renewal which expires next year, but i cancelled before they renewed it because the price was too high, so i still have the slip with an old policy number. I was going to bring my bike to a local shop like for a tune up before my real insurance starts so i can ride it right away. But i was wondering if a cop pulls me over can he verify if my insurance is active through my plate or from their little hi tech computers? Or would they have to call and verify? Thanks.. sorry if its a bit confusing..

don't pay the fine, go dispute the ticket and get a court date... as long as you could show the insurance slip on the court date, you will be fine.
