Thoughts on my Condo Lock System

This is not meant to be an Ad for my lock system.

I just want to ask everyone's opinion on what they think about what I have designed and fabricated. I made this after my bike was stolen from my condo parking. Didn't want to talk about it openly when I was using it, but now that I am selling it I want to see what everyone thinks.

My condo management has not given me any grief about it. They let me park my bike next to my car in my spot with this custom bike lock around the column.

Looks great, good job.
The hinge seems to be the weak link, how did you secure it?

The hinge was made from two smaller plates welded onto the main frame. The bottom of the pin is actually welded to one of the plates, so there is no removing the pin. I guess you could try to pry or cut the hinge, but then you are still left with 20 lbs of steel in a "D" shape connected to the bike and still wrapped around the column.

Would take about 5 mins to cut the bike loose from this. Great concept though, but nothing will stop a well equipped thief.

Nice job.

I agree. But it will encourage them to consider other bikes first. Anything is better than nothing.

It looks like a good visual deterrent for the roving bike thief.

You should patent that ****! $$$

An oversize heavy duty chain will do the same job IMO, give more flexibility on not having to park in an exact position 6 inches from a column, and it will a heck of a lot less expensive. I even wrapped part of a chain in a bicycle tube so that it wouldnt' scratch anything. The chain links were very oversized.

Something like this chain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFWVTUkihG4

Could you elaborate a bit more? I want to know what ways to make this more secure if I were to design somethign similar again in the future.

Remove your address from your ad so some bike thief doesn't consider this a personal challenge.

Thanks for the concern. The address is of a plaza, and I sold my bike already. :)

Can you move the padlock off the ground so it can't be smashed with a sledgehammer?

I understand there's still the D-shaped metal locked to the swingarm, but that could easily fit in the van with the bike still attached to it for removal at a later time.

The frame is so snug that even if the bolt was undone, you have to open up the frame to slide it out the side of the column, which means that you would have to bend the 1/4 steel or pivot the entire bike that is still connected. With my car and the neighbours car, there really is no room for that. I guess you could smash the padlock, undo the bolt, and then also break the hinge.

If you weld a square piece of 1/4" plate over the lock, maybe 3"x3", or 4"x4", there's no way to wield anything at the lock. Just leave enough space to access it with the key.
I think you're onto something here.
Good luck.

Might wanna smudge out your license plate so that no one gets clever and tries to conquer your lock!
Maybe I'm worrying too much, but, never good to show it IMO

Go to kickstarter and you will see if people really think your idea is good or not. They'll prove they are interested with real money.
This only applies to people who are near a pole though obv.

Also everyone'e pole sizes are different, no homo.

Great idea. But if they want it, they`ll get it. My buddies bike was stolen from a similar lock up situation. they were in and out in 3:50.
Also, IMO. both locks are to close to the ground. Thieves use the ground as leverage for one side of the bolt cutters.
