Thoughts on a track bike?? Which to start on..

Hey guys,

So last year I did stage 1 with racer 5 just to learn fundamentals of track riding. I am thinking of continuing this year...maybe stage 2 and 3 and I was wondering if after that I should start on a 125cc or 250cc.

Thinking of maybe buying a cheap CBR or ninja just for the track...as I do not want to potentially wreck my FZ6 and I don't have the skills to ride it to its potential anyway.

Did you guys start with a 125 or a 250? Just for track days (and is there any restrictions?)

Thanks!

Get something fairly cheap, as you'll crash it if you are trying at all. I'd suggest a bike that was set up for racing already.

Start with a small displacement bike, you'll definitely learn more on it. A SV 650 is a really quick bike with some experience, for example.

Finish the stages and rent a few times from Fawazz. Well that's what I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. I got a deal each time I booked and it was far less then prepping a bike + the additional costs of the logistics of owning one. Nothing like being able to show up to the track with your riding gear hoping on a bike then having them take care of it for the day and at the end you jump in your car and go home.

Eventually I will likely purchase a 600cc track only bike but for now (125/250cc) costs with a track prep it's far cheaper and easier to just rent from Racer5.

Shaman is right about the SV650, great starter track bike. Also, older 600's like 1998-2002 time frame. R6, F4(i), ZX6R or GSXR600 are all good and cheap to fix. I say older because they're not as crazy as the newer ones. Easier to learn on without constantly having to worry about lighting up the rear or wheelying.

Hrm,

So I like the idea of finishing the courses and then renting a few times...and then maybe try to find a cheap SV650.

Thanks guys!

I will echo Shaman and Dave, get something already set-up with the parts you would want and something older and tamer (SV, F4, ZX6R, etc.) If you look around you can find some good deals on 2000'ish track bikes. Here is an example: ZX6R

Yup great cheap learning tool . Lots on the market. Lots of spares. Fits many classes w/SOAR you can run Lwt Twins, Hvy Twins, Old Boys (if over 40), Lost Era Ltwt and hvwt (if first gen), Bridgestone (if on stones), Femme (if a lady), Nov 600, Nov SBK, Nov Open.

How can you go wrong with a deal like that kawi!!!

I have my eye on that ZX6R. Not to thread jack but I'm pretty sure it's the same concept on the track as it is on the street in regards to starting out on a lower CC bike? My buddy has an R1000 he's willing to sell to me for cheap but I don't know if I should start on the ZX first.

If Jamie can "ride" a 1000 at the track then anyone else can

Old junk even with decent aftermarket parts is no match for a stock modern day 600. New bikes are just so much better.

Old stuff is great for racing and trackdays, affordable and cheaper to fix.

But if your old bike needs fixing, stuff is harder to come by. Look at Kijiji, it's full with modern day bike parts.

Only thing wrong with the newer bikes that are coming out....they are not tall person friendly. Being 6'2 I've sat on a few of the newer R6 or CBR and I feel like a pretzel.

Try being 5 foot ****all!

One leg up,get going and hop on. Hope like hell I don't get stopped at pit out!

I had an SV650 and rode it on the track to learn on. It was great. It was intimidating as hell seeing all these guys lining up with their 748's, 1098's and 600's in track body work. It felt great passing anybody, because they were all on a "faster bike than mine"

I can't wait to get my R6 out there.

Another reason that '00 ZX6R is a great option IMO. Parts from 2000-2002 ZX6R and 2005-2008 ZZR600 parts will fit. Lots of parts around.

Never heard of an R1000, but start on the ZX.
