Thoughts on 1st bike

Hi all,

I'm a new rider and will be getting my M1 in the next couple weeks and then taking a course through RTI in April. I've contacted different insurance companies and have been given a few quotes, but SF seems to be the best at $876 for full coverage.

I have been looking at a cruiser for my first bike and have almost decided on buying a 2006 Yamaha Virago 250. It was a trade in from the Humber Motorcycle M1 exit course. They traded in all of their Yamahas, so there are quite a few to pick from. They gave you a couple options, $999 as is or $1500 certified, cleaned up and assembled.

Would any of you buy a bike that used to be training wheels for newbs?

The price seems to be really good.

Thoughts?

certified doesn't mean new clutch. newbs seem to burn out clutches before they understand the concept of the powertrain.

The clutch will be fine... Not alot of power on those, so the clutches last forever.

Expect a couple bumps and bruises, but you'll put some extra scrapes on it yourself most likely, so don't let that dissuade you.

Can't go wrong for a grand. If you're handy with a wrench, you can just put the street stuff back on it and you're good to go.

I'm an instructor in Durham. I bought one of our ex-course bikes years ago. It's still going strong, same clutch and all.

I would think it would be hard to beat for $1000. plus when you drop it... well its not like it hasnt been dropped before. I would certainly budget "just in case" money for any issues that might pop up but barring something catastrophic I cant see how you can lose.

Those bikes are fun to ride,I did my m1 exit course on one of those

Thanks for the link,I'm gonna see if I can scoop one up just to thrash it...

I'm with everyone else here, can you really go wrong for a grand ??

You can't go wrong with a grand, you can get a really good g... I mean, bike for that money.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

So...next question. I don't know anybody that rides or knows anything about bikes. Anybody here know about bikes who lives in Milton or would be willing come to Milton to tag along and help me pick out a decent bike?

I'd be eternally grateful.

I've read the guidelines for buying a used bike, but I'd be completely lost in a sea of 30 Yamahas. When I was there the other day, they all looked pretty much the same, although I could tell which bike had a dent in a tank or a ripped seat. LOL.

if it's got decent tires, and not alot of rash - that'd be my criteria.

According to the kijiji add, you've got a choice of 12 that they've got left.

just be sure to ask if anyone has ever farted on the seat also try to get a red one, red bikes are fast!

Yeah, that's why I went in. I thought they would only have a few left, but it was all fluff. They had around 30-40 bikes side by side in three rows. Couldn't even get to the ones in the back.

Like the consensus here, I agree..can't go wrong for a grand. You could ride that for a year or two and get more $ selling it then probably. Check the exterior of the engine for any visible leaks. Bikes that have been dumped quite a few times might develop leaks here and there.

They are an excellent bike. Check out the Virago Tech forum. Tons of stuff on these 250's there. Owners Manuals, repair manuals, mods, how-to's.
Great bunch of guys http://viragotechforum.com/

Just picked up a pair of these. They are pretty much all sold out. Maybe 2-3 left.

well, I guess OP doesn't need anyone to tag along since he doesn't have much to choose from anymore...

OP if you decide to get one, get the $999 one and I will bring it up to certifiable conditions for a lot less than 500 bucks as long you get the parts along with it...
