hey, a free tv!

You can just switch out the screen/repair it for pretty cheap.
So you could get a good working TV for under $100!

I thought only plasmas burnt pictures.

Correct. It's either a plasma or a joke ad. I'm thinking the latter.

I could fix it for free without replacing anything. Replacing the entire panel will cost waaay more than $100. On a tv out of warranty it's generally uneconomical to repair as the panels cost more than a new TV.

I would think the screen is like 50% of the cost of the TV at least....no?
More. The panel IS the TV. If you ever open up a modern flatscreen there is **** all in there outside of the panel. A few other boards, but the panel is the main cost component.

That's what I figured, hence "at least". And what does "I thought on plasmas burnt pictures" mean. Am I the ONLY person that had trouble figuring out what that means? Pictures burn into a plasma screen? Pretty sure you can do the same on an LCD. I have a slightly burnt picture on my Galaxy S1 cell phone from using it as a clock at night for a few nights (pro tip.....don't do this). Aren't cell phone screens essentially LCD?

It's actually called Burn in. Basically if you leave a picture on the screen long enough, it burns into the screen and leaves a ghost imagine when you watch something else. This is caused by uneven pixel degradation. Most commonly seen when people leave their displays on channels with news/stock tickers like CNN, or BNN. Also common when using a Plasma as a computer monitor.

All displays can burn-in (even CRT and LCD) but Plasma and OLED are much more susceptible to it because of the technology used. LCD is much less susceptible, hence why it is used it most computer displays. Otherwise you'd have the windows start bar and internet browser bar burnt-in in no time.

Your phone uses an OLED screen which are even worse than plasma for burn-in.

I have only ever seen about 4 Plasma displays ever have Burn-in which was caused by the aforementioned BNN/CNN. I have never seen it on an LCD.

My 5 yr old plasma supposedly has a 'screen wipe' thing that will 'unburn' images. At least that is what my manual says (just checked). I havent tried it since I havent needed to.

Yeah most new tv's come with it built in the menu. You can also get DVDs for tv's that didnt have it. It just alternates the colour of all the pixels for 15-20 mins straight. Or just leave on a nature show for a few hours.

Yep. My LG plasma has this feature and its almost 7 yrs old.

My Samsung LCD doesnt have this feature, but wishing it did.

I bought a brand new 27inch iMac a few years back. Left for vacation for a week, the computer was running as it always does but would normally go to sleep. When I came back, I saw that an update had popped up, and the computer was waiting very patiently for me to click yah or nay. The screen had burn in, not sure how long the pop up had been on, but it was probably most of the week. I thought I would now have to suffer with a nice big iMac with burnt screen, and I did for about a week, then it slowly faded away and now there is nothing to see.

If I was in this area, I would take the tv and see if it goes away over time. Worst case is your stuck with a TV you can gift to a friend, minus a few details, and look like a hero.
