If he was called in by the owner or anyone in danger he'd probably be OK but having a bat for self defense is a no-no. If you own one make sure you have a glove and ball as well and occasionally use them.

The bigger problem is chasing the perp down and taking a second swing. He missed but the Canadian rule seems to be to back off once the danger has diminished. If the second swing had connected it could be bad.

In 'Merica he would be ridiculed for not using a cannon.
