Theft coverage - alarm requirement

I understand that TD requires an alarm installed on your bike in order to provide theft coverage. How does one prove they have an alarm under these scenarios

1) You buy a bike used that already has an approved alarm installed
2) You you install the alarm yourself

Would it be sufficient to document pictures of the alarm installed on the bike or show that you have alarm fobs if the bike was stolen?

When I bought my bike they insisted I have insurance, but didn't ask for any proof. To that end I have the original receipt. I would assume a picture of your bike/alarm would suffice. Ultimately if your bike is stolen and not recovered, there is no way to know if you do or don't have an alarm.

Another option would be to have a notarized statement from someone (dealer perhaps?) confirming your bike has an alarm.

Also not sure that TD requires an alarm for all bikes. A friend is insured with them and said they did not ask him for one. Perhaps just certain categories of bikes require it?

Im insured with TD meloche monnex and they did ask me whether I had an alarm when I obtained theft coverage. However, they didnt ask for any proof and Im worried about what will happen in the unfortunate event that I need to make a claim. I dont have a receipt for the alarm because the alarm was a gift from my gf who I am no longer with, and I installed it myself. I guess I'll take pictures of it installed on my bike and get my lawyer friend to notarize a statement for me.

Perhaps your friend decided not to purchase Comprehensive (aka Fire and Theft) insurance? TD would only require an alarm if you are buying COMP.

Got TD they only asked about an alarm when I wanted Theft, got the cheapest one avalible, an alarm only deters honest thieves. thats what insurance is for.

i have insurance with TD (full, liability, comp, collision) and no alarm...they asked me if i had one, but didn't insist i get one...

the bf is also insured with TD (again, full coverage, liability, comp, collision) and based on the bike he has, they insisted that he have an alarm...

they explained to him that they have a list of bikes that require alarms and if you have one of the ones on the list, you must get one...

they don't ask for proof however, just that you get one (he didn't have to provide pictures or a receipt or a notarized letter - nothing)...i guess they figure if the bike gets stolen, they pay you and once and if it recovered, they can verify whether an alarm was installed or not...if so, you're in the clear, if not, then i guess they can charge you with insurance fraud because you made a false claim and ask/sue you to get their money back...

If you ever had to make a theft claim, the adjuster handling your case will determine what will be qualified as "sufficient proof" that your bike had an alarm installed. This could be receipts or even pictures as others have mentioned. I assume that this process is not much different when you make a claim for contents under your home policy for example. If you try to claim a stolen Blu-Ray player then the adjuster will ask for a receipt, pictures, original box, instructions manuals, etc. Anything that helps proves your case. Usually, those are sufficient for an adjuster if they believe your claim to be legit and honest. Each claim is different and handled on a case by case basis. The adjuster will deepen an investigation if they feel there is cause.

Since when does TD Meloche Monnex require an alarm for theft insurance? I have 3 bikes with theft coverage included with them and no alarm. Call again.
