its sad the amount of Musicians that need auto tune, and voice enhancers, and choregraphed dancers to put on a show.

this is what Rock n roll is all about.

Just go see pretty much any metal band live. Maiden can most definitely still bring it...

The majority of coutry performers also refuse to use it... I'm not counting those "pop country" types though.

As soon as I can tell auto tune was used, it's not music. Music is supposed to be real and organic, not something out of a synthetic machine.

Why? Why do people always need to invent stupid definitions for what something "needs" to be.

If it is satisfactory to someones auditory senses, then it has served it's purpose as music.

LMAO at synthetic machine. Terrific point BRO!

Evolution. Even opera singers now use whisker mikes when they once relied on pure vocal volume. It's all where the individual draws the line. If you like it it's good.
The down side is that it's hard to get a start if the talent doesn't have the equipment money. That goes for everything though.

Overly glossy pop music isn't my cup 'o tea either, but I can't fault people for liking what they like. 'In the ear of the beholder', or whatever. Personally, I'm a fan of musical talent and ability. It's always a letdown when I see a band who can't seem to pull it off live.

On a side note, it's funny to see some of my co-workers who are Nickelback fans get overly defensive, and say "Millions of Nickelback fans CAN'T be wrong!!1" Well, mass appeal ain't going to change my personal opinion that they're absolute crap.

If people want to pay $$ for a concert that is completely lip-synched, then let them. If they enjoy that kind of stuff then it's worth it to them.
I personally will not pay a cent to see music that's not live. I'm okay with them playing to a click track, but don't like any over-dubs, pre-recorded background vocals etc...

I dont understand how an artist can lip sync in front of other artists, like at an award show. How can they not be embarrassed about that ?

why dont they just go full out, and hire a look-a-like as well.

Honestly, I kind of understand it with all the choreography. You cant' expect a pop singer to sing everything perfectly live when they're dancing around like idiots for 2 hours straight (that's a workout!). Maybe they can sing the songs note for note if they were just singing but the public wants these cute little idiots dancing all in sync looking pretty and also sing.....something is going to give. Pop music is at least 50% image and presentation. Yes, it's pre-packaged, over produced crap IMHO, but if this wasn't what the majority of kids (and many adults) wanted it wouldn't make money and it would quickly die.

I'll stick to musicians with actual artistic merit though instead of songs that have certain chord progressions and length cause statistically this is what the record companies have determined sells the most records and makes the most money but to each their own.

I was playing some Loreena Mckennitt to my GF the other day (amazing voice and incredible talented) and I explained to her that she's not well known in the mainstream cause she's older and not great looking so she's not "marketable".

is the little non-perfections that make live music so great. if it were about perfection, they'd just play a cd over the loudspeakers and have some people dancing to it...

oh wait.... LOL

just listening to bands JAM is awesome. live music is way better, even if its crap music.

and about the dancing, and singing.. Madonna did it, jackson did it. all the old school artists did it..

grandmaster flash, sly stone, etc.. technology is killing artistry

What about making synthetic music with just your voice?

Music is what people say is music... I was basically referring to auto-tune (my fault for not making my point clear). If a singer needs it, then they aren't an artist. Nobody ever thinks Neil Young is a great vocalist, but he doesn't need to be. I just hate hearing someone singing, knowing that the sound has been modified by auto-tune.

I would leave a concert if I could tell it was being lip synced. I've lost respect for some artists after seeing them live, realizing that they only sound good in studio... Or that they didn't care to put in the effort of a show.

I realize that since the early 60s there have been effects on things like electric guitars, synthesizers started coming in around the mid 70s I would think... My biggest problem are these pop artists and auto-tune. Even in country music, I won't listen to half the CRAP of the new stuff... And I grew up on that stuff.

There are people I've heard that I can't understand why they don't have some form of a deal in the music industry, and then there are others that just plain out blow that have made it.

You ever heard of Skrillex?

so his music is taking other peoples music, and mixing with other peoples music, and calling it his own music..lol

i checked out a few of his songs on youtube. not for me. kinda all over the place, and no soul.

its more of a Commercial for Apple, showing what their compouters can do.

It was a sarcastic comment because a lot of people joke that Skrillex live is essentially him going up on stage and pressing play on his Mac Book. I personally can't stand Dubstep (I know that some hardcore Dubstep fans would say Skrillex is barely Dubstep but let's leave the musical elitism out of this).
