The return of photo radar...

PR may be coming as the police budget in Toronto is ridiculous and gets worse every year. Police services will be reduced like many other professions through technology.

Where is ROBOcop when you need him?

I liked the last 3-4 sentences.

Anyways, in my eyes, school zone, you should be going slower, so i don't care if a radar thats CLEARLY INDICATED and not mobile is setup in certain school zones.

They're usually so clearly indicated that if you get caught, it's because you weren't paying attention to your surroundings so you probably SHOULD get the goddamn ticket.

And i'm all for cops to be assigned to more useful assignments. More dangerous driving behaviors.

Eventually, everybody ends up knowing where photo radars are and then it's simple to
a) avoid them
b) respect them

I lived in Toronto during the first implementation, the units were being set as low as 103 km/h in a 100.

We would flash each other if we saw a silver and blue Astro van parked on the shoulder. They would park it at the bottom of a hill or after an overpass, never got dinged but it took a lot of work staying vigilant.

with today's smartphone technology someone will make an app and you can see on the fly easily where they are
bring it back :)

drivers in other countries are smart enough to put on their 4 ways and create a line behind them so everyone warns the cars around them of the photo radar

Cops need to spend time in school zones and on the highways for the left lane bandits as they are called...lol

That's a tenuous argument - cameras are not RELEVANT things to be paying attention to while driving. We should be looking out for pedestrians, other cars, debris, road and pavement issues - not damn cameras waiting to ding us with a fine because we're doing 9 over on an empty road.

I spent a couple days in Montreal last summer, and was hit with a $120 fine for doing 91 in a 70 zone. I received the picture along with the fine, which clearly showed that I was the ONLY car on the road for at least a mile. Four lane, dual carriageway, large physical median, and no cars in sight. That's a fine issued for the fines' sake, and it's garbage (I'm also just butthurt about it).

That being said, I do agree with reallocating resources. Perhaps cameras in high-risk zones, schools and the like, would be appropriate. What they SHOULD include is preemptive signage; "Camera ahead, SLOW". But of course, the goal isn't to reduce speeding, it's to increase fines.

That's actually the only way i think it should be enforced. Not as a trap but as an enforcer. Just like red light cameras but maybe even more obvious lol. And in Quebec city and Mtl area, i've seen them have obvious signage for some of them (haven't seen all of them, i don't live there). And that's what i mean by "you should be able to spot the sign that says "Camera ahead, Slow" as you drive or ride
Because you should be paying attention to those signs, just like the speed limit signage, or school zone signage.

Has been available for years... Waze

just gonna have to find a way to not get ticketed. Waze might work, especially if they're static cameras.

If this is a GO, wonder how long before they go Ontario wide?

I was ok when they first came around years ago. I've driven down in Aussie and they have signs posted that there are camera's ahead... I have no idea why the government puts signs up saying a speed camera is coming up LOL

In Europe I passed tons of speed camera's on the bike and only a few of them produced tickets. I noticed some were for front facing for cars and never caught bikes.

I'm good with speed camera's coming back to Toronto now, ever since my kid was born I SOMETIMES just drive exactly at 100kph on the right lane of the 401 these days. If he's sleeping and I can save a few pennies on gas and give him 5 more minutes of sleep and we are in no rush, its a win win.

Under certain conditions I could live with PR. Like if it's set at 15kms over 15kms over. Altho driving is a privilege, going 15 over is a right but going 15 over that is semi-dooshy and should be rewarded with some additional taxation but no demerit points or insurance flim flam. I think the Supreme Court of Canada would agree.

It's about revenue, not safety.

I wouldn't have a problem if they were in places with legitimate safety concerns (e.g. school zones) and only active at the times when that concern exists (e.g. starting an hour before school starts and finishing an hour after the routine after-school activities are done) - not at 11 PM and not at 5 AM when the school is empty and there is no reason for anyone to be around. AND, as in Europe, it is used as a deterrent - by having a great big visible sign 100 metres before the camera's enforcement zone starts.

I have a problem with it when EVERY residential neighborhood declares themselves to be a "community safety zone" as if they were different from anyone else.

IIRC no laws were changed when they stopped using photo radar; the enabling legislation was never taken off the books; so theoretically the provincial legislature wouldn't have to do anything.

I don't see any excuse for driving 30-40kms/hr over on marked 80km roads. I do it all the time but that's not the yard stick.

As long as they're set to something reasonable I have no problem with them. In school zones particularly.

in quebec you dont lose demerit points. you only get a fine. pretty certain

That's the way it was here as well when PR was province wide.

I always suggested that those who scream "cash cow", the system could be setup the other way around - get nailed for points, but minimal or no dollar penalty. Needless to say nobody is excited about that option either. ;)

The line outside court would be like for new Iphone but without the camping.

No way to prove who was actually driving... the path of least resistance is just a fine on the car owner with no points (back to cash grab....).

If allowed, I fully expect to see it on Lakeshore around the Ex, in the middle of the night.... You know to protect people.
