the 650 conundrum...

So the usual nonsense with trying to insure a 650.

trying to get a friend the best quote possible.

26 year old female
1 ticket and 1 accident. (both going off the record in a year)

she has an affiliation with TD Meloch, but they wont touch her with that record...pretty rough, i figured the affiliation was key.

So she is current with SF on a 250 and has a fantastic rate. (~700/yr)

Is there any other option that Jevco and SF for a 650?
Im thinking SF will perform rape on her because its 649cc.

Also she started her policy last september, so by my calculations off Viffer's chart. She should get back a 7-10% refund if she has to cancel SF in the next month.

Anyone with a ninja 650 care to post their rates/record, that would be helpful.

She really really wants a 650, price is perfect, power is perfect. Only thing stopping her is insurance.

thank you!

I just came from a 250r and bought a new (2010 650R) my insurance is approx. $890 per year (M2 lic - 3 years exp. no tickets or accidents). The 250r was $650 / year. Im with TD and when I asked why the rate was so high , they mentioned they rate that bike as a performance bike. I told them it's the EX 650R (sport touring bike ) not a ZX6R. They said it didn't matter because it goes by the CC engine size (go figure).

I don't know if your friend has ridden the 650R yet. But I'll give you my first impressions since I also ride a 250R.
- 650 R great power delivery (begineer friendly) alot quicker than the 250R but still managable
- 650 R a lot heavier bike approx. 75 lbs more (heavier than most 600 cc SS bikes) . You can really notice the difference in the corners. The 250R is a lot easier to manouver. In fact I think it has a better setup for it's size.
- 250R gets almost 100 km more dist / tank of gas
- 650 R more upright seating position (unless you upgrade the bars e.g Sport Bars) then the postion is almost the same as the 250R
- seat height - ground reach is a little more difficult for shorter people (the width of the bike is wider thus reducing the reach)
- 650 R handles the highway alot better (more passing power, less wind hitting you directly, you dont get pushed around as easily).

hope that helps

I think she may be surprised by SF. I got a quote on three bikes this year and the resembled this:

07 CBR 600 RR $60/month
11 GSX-R 750 $87/month
12 CBR 1000RR $93/month

I live in 30 min North of Toronto and 20 South of Barrie in a small town.
I have a spotless record.
I am 30 years old.
I get a $10 per month multiline discount.
I am on State Farms "A" plan.

wow, those are stellar rates!

vehicle discount? anything im missing?

im 28 and clean and they wanted 2600 for a 1000cc.

maybe your location? just wow...

Are you sure your multiline discount is only $10? 10% maybe? even that seems low..

I had my 650r with State Farm for my first year ridding, had my M2 and originally got a quote for 1400 for a cbr 600, didn't think to re-quote when I picked up the 650r assuming it should have been less as a non super sport but those extra 50cc's bumped the price up to 1850/year. Perfect driving record. Was in my late 20's at the time. The second year they tried to renew me at the same rate so I told them to talk a walk.. ended up at TD Meloche Monnex for $900/year.

I'm not sure why you think the 650 rate is high? $890 for a 650CC compared to $650 for a 250CC seems like a pretty decent deal to me.

The way its broken down on the policy for the bike it shows a discount of $10 per month on the bike itself. Funny you mention TD cause they quoted me over $10,000 per year! I tell everyone the same thing shop around. I and my wife have 3 automobiles, 2 motorcycles and a home policy.

****, SF rated her 2000$/yr
thats not gonna happen.

so Jevco is the only option. hopefully they are comparable to TD. I would assume they are.

Hey Viffer, based on your refund/owing chart for SF.

She started in sept, *may have to cancel in july. By that chart, i see them owing her roughly 7% back.

Is that an accurate assumption?

thanks!

That seems about right, depending on what day in the month he policy took effect and what day in the month it will be cancelled. There is an Excel calculator attached to my sticky post that helps with that sort of calculation.

WOW!

so basically, as a new rider. it's cheaper to ride a 600cc SS than a 650cc tourer!!

what a great system we have...

can someone please shake some heads on this...its totally backwards.

I hope no one does...I like my SS rates and would like them to remain the same.....

as do i, but its not a good approach for the new people.

she wants the 650 for comfort and also its decently sporty...

dont get me wrong, i loved my rates when i had a 600. but its just silly that new people cant afford a more reasonable bike. IE ninja 650, sv, fz6, etc
