Thanks highway department! 403 between Ancaster and Hamilton

The Highway folks filled in all the cracks between Wilson Street and the entrance of the Linc, both directions, in Hamilton in the last few weeks.

The problem is that whoever the ****** was that did it overfilled the cracks, so now the tar stands proud in that section. First thing in the morning, with the dew on it, its super slippery.

Even on the way home, the bike will shimmy a little if I drive over them. With new shoes on the bike, that's not a good sign.

So, thanks Highway Department! Should whoever is unaware of this in the dark send you a bill, or?

The tar is overfilling the cracks because it will get worn down/settle to the same level as the asphalt quickly. By then it will be compacted and not sink further. If they leveled it at first, the cracks would become depressions.
Should I send you a bill for this....?

Not the bill part of it, but the overfilling is what I was thinking. They had to overfill them so that it 'settles' into the crack. This can be with time as well as lots of vehicles 'pushing' it into the crack. If you have it level at first it 'settles' and then gets even lower and hence you have a crack again...

New riders should be aware of how slippery and unsettling highway snakes can be even those on the level.
Have seen a few stretches where it's more snake than road. :(

Not a big issue on a highway unless you were braking hard but could be very nasty on a curve.

I didn't realize there were so many crack experts on here!

So tell me, why did the cracks they filled in a week earlier not stand proud? They were level when laid.

They were slightly ashamed.

Gnomes man...****ing Gnomes!

I dont think its because its new or because its overstuffed. The exit of the parkway and onto the parkway at Mohawk rd or Golflinks was a F&%& mess last year in hot weather or rain and you had to be careful or the front end would slide while cornering. They have since paved the exit and its great now. Hopefully they will pave the on ramp???You would think in a time where everyone {Gov't} is so concerened with saving us they wouldnt do this.

gnomes ??? u rang??

What I don't like is the wobbly grooves in the pavement they rip as they tear up the old stuff prior to laying down new then merrily direct traffic over it...... grrr.
Would not be bad if they were reasoanbly straight but they wander and so does the bike want to.
QEW in particular....operator must have been seeing double the way the grooves wandered.

It's a nasty stretch of road now with more snake than road. Bike feels interesting at times............. Even feels terrible in the car.

Just gives me a reason to get off at #52 and take the long way home starting at 99 HWY. Not a particularly twisty road but fun nonetheless.

We have had a rough go the last 2 years with construction, that's for sure. Agreed with MacDoc when they did the QEW the guy running the pavement cutting machine was cross eyed and wandered something fierce. I especially liked West bound just past #6 on the curve when the pavement was all tore up. I was gripping the handlebars like a little kid on their first roller coaster.

I will say that the torn up pavement at Walker's line exit doesn't bug me nearly as much with new tires. They made a huge difference. However, I do enjoy the odd hairy adventure switching lanes when they leave new and old pavement, and a 3 inch difference between the two.
