Texas does the right thing

There's a reason why traffic analysts talk about the eighty-fifth percentile speed. Changing laws to increase speeds isn't a panacea, but realizing that limits should be set to the eighty-five percentile speed limits speed differential, thereby improving traffic flow and safety.

Limits were 75 MPH in N Dakota and I happily took things up to 85 until I saw the gas gauge going down like the Titanic.

However I think drivers who want to drive at high limits should be licenced as such with 3 to 5 year re-tests. Instead of licence plates on cars maybe the driver should have a large D/L plate he puts in the window showing his licence class. If you can't handle the highway stay off it. Drivers responsibility is to ensure the vehicle is safe for the intended roads.

Just east of Markham on #7 the highway is 4 lanes, almost no houses and they've lowered the speed from 80 to 60 kph. It gave someone a job to change all the signs but everyone ignores them anyway. If anyone was to actually do the 60, they'd be a road hazzard. Then I pull onto a narrow 2 lane sideroad and the speed is 80. I have to wonder is there any common sense anymore.

No need to wonder.

That's because any slower and you risk getting carjacked or shot.

It's Texas, not Deetroit. In Deetroit you don't stop for red lights, after 7:00pm. In Texas you'd only get shot for trespassing. You know, like, "You kids get off my lawn!"

It's so funny you say that! My buddy was recently in Detroit, and made a wrong turn somewhere, and ended up in a bad part of town at night. Cops pulled him over and asked him if he was crazy being there, and told him to lock his doors, don't stop for reds, and get the hell out of there. lol

Note the bit about how the change was linked to SAFETY. That's right, as I've provided documentation for in the past, a higher speed limit can actually lead to safer roads by lowering CONGESTION.

In Texas there are so many two-lane highways and slow drivers who insist on impeding flow in the left lane. And texting while driving is out of control down here, so few drivers actually pay attention to a faster vehicle approaching from behind.

If the limit were raised to 85mph (currently the highest you'll see is 70mph), I could see that it would discourage the slow pokes from hogging the passing lane, assuming they're paying attention to what's going on around them.

imagine your mileage if you were doing 85mph (~140kph), you would have to refuel atleast 2x as much as you'd normally do cruising at 60mph (~100kph)

recently i've actually been driving at the limit in the far right lane doing 100 and found myself getting 700km out of 40L tank, whereas normally i'd get 400km doing 130-140

i don't understand why people moan about gas prices, and wait in those stupid lines for cheap gas... only to burn it doing 120-130

lets be honest? how much time do you really save: 5-10 minutes? all for what: speeding home to watch commercials, check facebook/twitter?
