i got my bike up for sale. there is a guy that wants to take it out for a test ride.
would you or have you guys let ppl take your bike out for a ride?
i told the guy there is no way unless i have the full asking price in my hand.

its not as if i am selling a cbr125(not that those cant get hurt) i have a zx10r for sale a pretty dumb bike with way to much power for lots of ppl inculding me

When I was bike shoping one dude told me the same thing and it makes total sense. What happens if they drop it???

Absolutely the right call. You have no way of knowing what skills and experience the guy has or anything about him. He might be trying to steal it (be wary if a guy gets a ride from someone else and the dude stays in the car).

I'm even careful with letting anyone sit on it as I've seen idiots drop them and I heard of someone scraping the gas tank with a belt buckle.

Its difficult as you do want to sell and don't want to piss anyone off but you don't want some buttwad messing with it either.

Good luck with it.

Be sure to see their license if they ride it because if it is suspended and they are stopped riding your bike, it can be seized by authorities.

Not unless you have your asking price in your hand.

Don't let him ride it. Have him tag along in his car while you put your bike through it's paces. Your bike insurance does not cover him either.

If the test ride results in an accident it's your insurance that goes up for five to seven years. Probably double. Do the math.
I said insurance not "Bike insurance" so even if you give up riding the claim can follow to your cage.
If the guy isn't familiar with your make / model of bike he is more likely to mess up.
If his licence isn't valid your insurance company may give you a hard time. What's your house worth?

If I sell a bike its certified and I'll demonstrate that it works. No test rides.

Eveyone fixates on what if they steal / wreck the bike. They don't think about the bigger picture of years of insurance punishment or worse.

Cash in hand or no dice. I was lucky when i sold mine, no one asked to ride it.

Absolutely not!

this is a personal thing... if the guy shows up in a car? probably no test ride... however if you show up on your own bike then i probably would allow you to demo it ... but understand that dropping it means buying it full price...

having said that i've bought all my bikes with test rides only ... the ones that i couldn't test ride? i didn't buy ... tho in the past 10 years when i'm shopping for a used bike? i arrive on my bike, usually with a few friends on there bikes...

but again this is a personal decision ...

As long as your bike's insured, I don't see what the big deal is. No tire-kickers though - just serious buyers. I wouldn't buy anything "as is" without taking a test drive. No one's going to hand you full asking price to take a test ride.

I had one guy show up in a pickup. He took my bike for a test ride, handed me cash, then loaded it up in the back of the truck. I let him take my new bike for a spin too.

Never would I allow that. I will offer to TAKE the potential buyer for a ride and that will show if the bike is mechanically sound. If that isn't good enough then they are not prepared to buy it so good riddance. Or do what I did to a tire kicker that I determined was just wasting my time. I took the loser for a death run down Snake Rd. He left before the colour returned to his face.

Take him for demo ride as pilion. Or 100% cash in hand.

When I was shopping for my bike, I went and saw a couple of bikes where I asked the owner to take me for a short spin. I did not even ask for a test ride by myself. Nobody objected to taking me as pillion, looked like these guys thought it was a reasonable thing to ask for.

I sold my bike last year and let the guy ride it around.
I personally don't care. I have a theft policy with my insurance company, so if they are willing to put their future in jepordy , they can have it. (i'm trying to sell it any ways)

if i had no insurance than no rides AT ALL, even with asking price in my hand. Last thing i want to do is be sued for $100,000

Some MAY have alluded to this, but I wouldn't let anyone test ride.

I would if i had money in hand (full asking price)....

i've let people test drive cars while i sit in as passenger, but i dont really feel too safe letting anyone ride off on my bike. the chance of falling is just to damn high. its a little more difficult to flip a car over. nonetheless, if they were to present me with a price that we agree to sell for then i wouldnt have a problem.
