Telus strike coming up?

I managed a call center and can say there are very good reasons to have call center agents at the office. Especially as they learn their role or cross training and having a supervisor or Team Leader close by to coach during a call or take over a call escalation when needed. Remotely, the agent has to recognize they need help and dial in and possibly wait for a TL or Supervisor.

There are other communication benefits managing the staff and assignments. An agent can stand up or raise their hand or a supervisor can hear an agent raise their voice. All good ways to identify a need for additional support etc.

There are draw backs to both approaches of course. Having an office, there can be issues that impact resources. Public transportation, weather or even the facilities themselves. Having a diversified work force helps with continuity of business. Working for a company now that only has one office in Montreal and can say having all resources in DT Montreal doesn’t always work well so, remote resources is are beneficial.

150 members upset that TELUS is closing Ontario offices and forcing RTW in Montreal...

I'm no fan of RTW, but have had a few companies that have changed their strategy and it was 'come here to our new office, or find a new job'. I've found a new job each time.
I think this is more leaning towards constructive dismissal than rtw. If they were offered 18 months, that would be a hard fight for employees to come out ahead in court.

I suspect the replacement employees will be cheaper (and/or potentially subsidized by qc government).

I agree with nakkers, supervision is more effective at a physical location. You get a feeling of the tone and pace of every person without the painful task of listening to the 100 hours of tape created yesterday.

As I understand it they are closing quite a few physical locations. If I can get enough employees at one office to do the work, eliminating rent/supervision/overhead at the other offices seems like good business (but reorganization almost always sucks for employees).

That is a vague byline. It gives the impression you're standing up for Canadian workers, not workers at a Canadian corporation.
All I’m saying is a company has the right to relocate or change their place of business. Nothing more. Employees can decide to do so, or find a diff job.

Patagonia apparently also doing similar…

No argument there. I'd like to know the percentage of theses employees at Teus' call center that have their wages partially paid by government programs while said employees in question are being vague with the wording in their press release pleading to push a patriotic angle.
