Telemarketers

Is it just me or have telemarketers been getting significantly worse recently. I used to get a call here and there and it was always a person that I could either tell to **** off or play with by asking retarded questions if I was in the mood. It seems like I'm getting 3 or 4 a day, mostly recordings, on my home line and cell (which never used to happen). I've stopped filing numbers with the CRTC as they seem to do absolutely nothing about it what-so-ever. Is there actually nothing that can be done. If telemarketers were a celebrity I'd ******* have them line up and I'd fight each and every one of them!! I've had 2 calls on my home # between 8:00 and 8:45 this morning alone!!

/end rant

At least that used to be fun. Now it's just a recording of my captain speaking or someone trying to consolidate my credit card debt.

My home line is VoIP with a service that allows blacklisting and has a very powerful blacklisting tool. Not only can I do entire area codes or prefixes but I also have options as to how to deal with them (in my case it's "The number is not in service" message). I run CyanogenMod on my cell phone and it also has number blacklisting which, while not as powerful as my VoIP provider's, has been pretty useful in controlling that crap.

I get 2 that call me all the time. Captain of the cruise and consolidate debt. I dont mind so much because it makes me feel like someone wants to call me. Those are pretty much the only calls I get. lol

Sounds like VoIP.ms, I've been using them for the last year, it's an incredible service. It pains me I didn't discover them sooner.

In my case, I have two numbers. One that I give out to friends, family, etc. and one that I give to everyone else. The first rings the phone, the second goes straight to voicemail. The amount of calls I get to that number is hilarious.

I have at least 40 numbers blacklisted now as well, each are redirected to a "Number is not in service" tone so that the number is (typically) automatically removed from their calling list.

Cheap as hell too. I put $25 on the account at the beginning of last December, and I still have $7 left today.

Lol, exactly.. That's how long it takes me to go through the $25 (about 3-4 months) but I have 1 647 number in regular use, 1 parked (old cell number, might start using it again) and 2 toll-frees. Don't talk much and a good chunk of my talk is sip to sip, so I don't pay anything for that. Actually set up my mom, uncle and my in-laws with subaccounts and internal extensions, so my uncle can reach me at 101, I can reach his 2 phones (depending on whether he's at home or at his gf's) at 102 and 105, my in-laws are at 103 and my mom is 104. My dad is a technophobe, so there's no chance in hell he'd get in on that. He hired a geologist just to do his computer work (main reason) and to drive him around when he's drunk (business lunches with clients and investors) lol I might bring him a pre-configured SIP phone next time I go to the old country and just plug it into the router lol

I just start repeating everything they say. Throws them in a loop and they usually just hang up. Or I pretend to be partially deaf and act like an old senile person.

Last telemarketer called me about cleaning my ducts. I played with them by asking question about ducts and finally saying i have no ducts, only hondas and suzukis.:)

You really have two realistic options. Your number is on a list of valid numbers that they sell to each other. The Canadian no call list is a total failure so that is not going to help.

Option 1)--put the disconnect triple tone (Google it) as the first thing on you answering machine. The auto dialer will here it and automatically remove your number from the list (the device thinks your number has been disconnected and is no longer valid). This will be the most effective solution, it works so well that I have had my bank send me a letter asking for my new phone number (because their auto dialer removed my number).

Option 2)--if you do answer (and actually get someone) try to keep them on the line as long as possible. Long duration negative outcomes cost them money, they will drop your number.

Although swearing at them or Seinfeld like approaches may make you feel good for 30 seconds it will not stop a follow-up call (they could care less about short duration negative outcomes). I have torn a new one to an telemarketer just to have the same one a week later, number was not removed. Even worse the call may never actually end up with someone to yell at (auto dialer hangs up because there is no operator free or it is just a recording), they WILL call back again.

Option 2 will not work at all. I used to work as a telemarketer in high school and trust me, they don't care if the call gets nowhere... If the telemarketer does get annoyed, they will just hang up and you'll receive a call from them the following week. The ONLY thing you can do is ask them politely to remove you from their list (This would mean this particular company) and if the person isn't a ******, they will (also its the law, but not like the telemarketer cares-the only person that is effected is the owner of the company).

The DNC (Do not call) list that the CRTC provides you is a complete failure as you stated. People reported that they actually received more calls after registering for that list as the law of not being able to call those numbers on that list only applies to Canadian telemarketing companies (People outside of Canada are able to call you legally).

Screaming and swearing at them only works sometimes on the newbies that get scared, the rest of the "telemarketing veterans" actually use that as a sort of entertainment as it is a very boring job...

I've never heard of Option 1 but it sounds like it might work.

There is really no other option (unless this option 1 works) to stop the telemarketing calls. Even I myself have received countless calls from the stupid cruise thing and 'get out of debt' crap.

BTW, people have paid to get their number "privated" (I don't mean blocking your number from being sent) and it doesn't work. By privating their number, their number is not even listed on Canada411 or the phone book yet the numbers still get out. Its because either Bell/Rogers sells their phone list (the way most telemarketing companies get their lists), auto dialers, or phone lists being stolen.

-I just realized I worked 2 pretty crappy jobs in high school (Telemarketing and Rogers Sales Rep)

I had a friend that worked as a telemarketer and some old lady did this to him. He lost a lot on sales that day and he was ANGRY as a result. For some companies, this does work. For others, it's a waste of your time and minutes.

If there is no answer at the other end within the first 2 seconds of hello, it's a telemarketer. That's enough time to hang up without saying anything else.

Making sales isn't as easy as you think while telemarketing no matter what you're "advertising" (selling). To think your friend lost a lot of sales from even a 5 min call (Avg call I'd say would be 30secs-3 mins) is total BS.

I was reading the bio of some rich guy who worked as a telemarketer while in school. He hit a lot of higher income types by dialing the numbers missing in the sequences. He had correctly assumed the missing numbers to be unlisted. Not sure if that still works.
