Teaching Kids Traffic Safety

School's back in and the kiddies are back. I have four public schools within a one kilometer radius of me and 3:00-4:00 everyday is a danger zone. I'm sure all the parents think their kids follow the rules of the road, but I'm telling you that many don't. A lot of kids are running across against red lights, and against advance green lights. I'm just kindly asking that members with school age kids remind them of pedestrian crossing rules and why adherence is so important.

I saw 2 kids get off the school bus the other day with safety vests on.
On a side note 2 of them quickly ran over to two garbage cans at the curb and began to pick through them.

You also have kids walking down the middle of the road as if it's their personal sidewalk. One day, one of them will get run over and then we'll have a new bunch of nanny-state laws because the parents and the schools were too lazy to teach children under their care the rules of the road and the reasons behind them.

You also have big kids who never grew up driving now, with the same short attention...

Back in the day there weren't as many cars, and the streets were filled with kids playing hockey.

Now a days you're lucky if you can get someone to stop at a signed and lighted cross walk.

They've been duly warned, but they still tend to mimic older kids and adults, so be careful how you cross.

Pretty sure I overheard a news story last night about a kid getting hit, maybe even killed.
The story focused on how dangerously people are driving through schools zone from what I heard.

Kid on a dirtbike was hit up near Innisfil by another bike. That might have been the story.

I blame this on the school buses.. Having grown up behind the iron curtain, they taught us everything we needed to know to be living pedestrians by the end of kindergarten so we were ready to walk to school  No school buses  Obesity is much lower down there, too

Yeah, the walk is only 1.6 km, but it's the time. I blame two working parent families, or better yet the greed that causes a need for two working parent families.

Ever try to cross the street at a crosswalk lately? It's worth your life. As a kid, we used to run up to the crosswalk, without all those fancy lights mind you, and stick our fingers out so that the cars would slam on their brakes. Then we'd run. Nowadays you press the button, stick your finger out and they still try to run you down, as though you were worth points. The reason people cross against the lights, or don't walk to the crosswalks is that they are irrelevant to the vehicles on the road.

Amen to all you said.. One qualification though.. In Eastern Europe you probably do get points for every kid you run down, so kids are taught to be street-smart when it comes to that. Kids learn to develop their spidey sense. Of course, the fact that the parents take a bit of time to point out a couple of omnipresent idiots to the kids helps.

Can't say sh*t to people these days, noone listens. Parents are leading by terrible example! Daily I see parents with toddlers in tow, crossing, 2, 4 and even 6 lane roads against lights, stepping out into traffic without even looking, walking two strollers wide down the road because they can't chat if they use the sidewalk. Loading and unloading their kids on the traffic side of their car instead of the curb where it's safe. I am not sure what one thing has changed in the last twenty years or so, but people just don't care. I only ever bolted out from the curb once as a youngster and I got my tail smacked and HARD, never did it again....Looking both ways whenever crossing a path or roadway is just the safe thing to do. I am well aware that in a fight between an suv and a person the suv will win.

The crazy thing is that drivers today or more inattentive than ever, you'd think pedestrians of all ages would be even more careful, the exact opposite has happened though. I'm a courier driver and the stuff I see on a daily basis blows my mind, there is no age limit to stupidity either. I see pre-schoolers riding bicycles with no adult in sight, tweens and teens walking 5 and ten abreast down streets and across parking lots like they own them, old ladies stepping out into traffic with neither a look left or right! Stupid seems to be contagious these days, I typically work in Bradford and even though their have been a dozen pedestrian fatalaties in the past 5 years their, noone seems to care. Guess it won't happen to them?! Practice being safe with your friends and family, pass on tips some people are just ignorant. I was at a friends barn party a few weeks ago they encouraged people to bring their atvs and other toys to ride their 50 acre farm and trails. When we arrived some a- - hole was on the road with an 80km speed limit while he, hos wife and another moron let his young child ride their atv down the middle of the road!!!!! When I mentioned to the guy theat their was a giant empty field for that he pretty much wanted to get in a fight??? What do I know? Pffft
Don't be a statistic, be safe, and pass it on to those you love!!
