TD Meloche Monnex - Which Alarm

If you just call them I'm pretty damn sure you can get a list of acceptable alarms.

The guy i spoke with said he doesnt know. Even suggested getting one of those chains with a siren. I thought i read once that there is an actual list.

There is an approved list.

There's also a list of options that an alarm must have to qualify if it's not on the approved list.

The Gorilla was the cheapest, easiest to install on the approved list when they told me to get an alarm.

It's too bad alarms are such a waste of money and battery when fitted on a bike.

When I signed they gave me a list, but essentially any wired alarm with a siren, sensors, etc should be ok. I know I asked about things like a Xena disk lock with alarm and they said that didn't qualify.

I have also heard it has to be 'professionally installed', but I don't know if that is true or not.

As mentioned, aside from the list of approved alarms, they have a list of required options that, if your non-approved alarm has, will allow it to be used.

I was told that I had to have the alarm professionally installed too, and to keep the receipt in case of a claim. While I could have easily installed the alarm myself and saved a bunch of money, I didn't want to give my insurance company a reason not to payout in the event of a claim.

Is this requirement from TD something recent ? I've been insured with them for 4 years and just updated my policy (new bike) last summer. They only asked if I had an alarm ( I don't). Never mentioned anything about it being a requirement for comrehensive. I have full coverage. Does it depend on the value of the bike, or type of bike ?

When I signed up the 250, they said if it was a SS I'd need an alarm for theft coverage. As the 250 is treated as a sports tourer, it only meant a few dollar discount each month, and wasn't a requirement for that bike.

The alarm bit is not new - when I registered my 2000 RC51 five years ago and just recently my 2005 RC51 the operator asked about the brand of alarm. In both instances there was an alarm. Gorilla, and Scorpio respectively. It's a bugger, but from what I remember a requirement for full coverage.

I just switched to TD and they were asking if I had an alarm. As I do not, comprehensive is not covered. They're closed on weekends but I'll give a call Monday and see if I can dig up more info.

I set my deductible to be 1000 so with an alarm and install (my guess total would be another 1000) I'd be out of pocket 2000 should something happen. Not sure if it's worth it as an 07 zx6r probably goes (and I'm guessing here) for around 6000.

I haven't had any troubles with anything covered under "comprehensive" since 2007 when I purchased the bike brand new but I guess that's what insurance is for. Murphy's law will probably make someone steal my bike now that it's not covered...

PM me if you get more info on your end also, we are after all in the same boat. Just don't steal my bike ;-)

Does it matter which alarm I get to satisfy the Meloche Monnex alarm requirement for comprehensive?

Can I get one of these $10 POS alarms?

Won't work. They have a list of approved manufacturers, of which you can get a cheap $99 version or a more expensive one - they don't care at that point. Gorilla and Scorpio are on their list for sure. I installed Scorpio SR-i900 on mine and they're happy with it.

And as other pointed out, it's only a requirement if you want full coverage, and it only applies to SS bikes as far as I know (never had a cruiser, sorry).

Called TD and here's the list of approved alarms.

1) Armed Guard
2) Auto Watch
3) Gorilla
4) Merlin
5) Sherlock
6) Scorpio
7) Viper
8) Phantom Max
9) Yamaha Cycle Lock
10) BMW
11) Global Tech GPS

Of those alarms they MUST HAVE 3 of the following 5 to qualify

1) Audible Alarm
2) Backup Battery
3) GPS Tracking
4) Immobilizer
5) Motion Detection

Once it's installed, give them a call to update your insurance with that information and that's it. I don't know if you have to fax in any documentation but that's the info I got today.

All the best.

After I posted the message above I went online and found a scorpion alarm. Was on sale for 138 now for 108. I added in the perimeter sensor and the matching harness for my bike.

Anyway, long story short, bike now has an alarm that meets TD requirements, I'll be calling in tomorrow for them to update my profile to include comprehensive.

Here's the website where I made my purchase.

My first thoughts are it works, perimeter sensor is a little off but I'll tinker with it this weekend. Tip sensor is completely off, have to shake it like you're killing a bear for it to trigger and then sometimes it only thinks you're near it (perimeter vs tilt). If you sit on the bike, it chrips away but if you stay still it shuts itself up like you wernt there.

Probably all sensitivity settings... The only true fail I'm bothered by is the RFID auto enable/disable. Even with the antenna as close as I can get to the ignition (mounted ecu at rear and antenna runs to mid bike where the tank "starts"), the distance is still too far for it to function. So I'm just bothered they don't give a longer antenna. For now it's manual enable/disable until I figure out how to extend the antenna.

Best of luck to the rest of you who are in the same boat!

Just got off the phone with TD. They asked for the make and model of the alarm and added comprehensive. Premium went up from $82 to $92 per month. Kind of odd that this was covered with other insurance companies I've been with but whatever, bike it now covered. Steal away...

So You get a copy of a receipt for an alarm and send It to them.?
How do they know you installed it? Or didn't just return it?
If your bike is stolen you're never seeing it again and neither will they....

I bought a gorilla alarm on amazon.com to satisfy TD. Got it installed at Rosey toes (2009 Monster zx6).

They never asked for proof. My bike was still stolen in 3 weeks from underground. Never seen again.

If TD is 200 cheaper then the next quote, then it is worth getting an alarm and signing with them. As a theft deterrent alarms are useless. Your bike will be stolen if the thieves want it.

They just asked for the make and model of the alarm. Didn't need a receipt or to know it was even installed (although I told them I got an alarm and installed it).

You can get the grand idea of calling in and saying you have one and make it up but those calls are all recorded so if your bike is stolen and if it does ever show up, it'd likely be fraud on your part, IF there was no alarm and no receipt. No idea how they would prove you had one except a receipt...

I have a receipt, took pics of my install, made a few movies with me tipping bike, straddling bike, turning on ignition and proximity sensors where the alarm triggered each time.

Just get the alarm, it's not like it's going to break the bank and the install takes about 45 minutes including taking the bike apart.
