Talking price down

Hey guys,

I was curious to see what various ways you all may have done this before. I'm looking to pick up a used Suzuki GZ250 (2005-2007) at this place called VOS Motors up at Finch and Keele, bikes are listed here.

The asking price before taxes looks like $2800, and I always know of people negotiating this. I want to know what I can use as bartering material to knock that price down as sensibly as possible (granted, 2800 is a great deal too). Perhaps the extra money can be reinvested into some accessories :]

Let me know what's up, thanks in advance!

If you're looking to use the savings on gear, ask the dealer to include gear (if they stock that sort of thing). Usually this jives pretty well since the lose:return is less than a straight up lower selling price.

Just try haggling with them....haggling is an art...

Offer them a price and be prepared to walk away. I'd say on $2,800 there isn't a whole lot of profit in so they may not be able to move on the price.
In that case I'd look for gear or accessories to sweeten the deal.

I walked away from a bike at Clare's Cycle in Fenwick because I felt they were asking about $500 too much.
They wouldn't add accessories and weren't willing to budge on the price.

By waiting and looking harder, I was able to get a virtually identical bike for the price I was willing to pay, and it had 10,000 fewer km's on it to boot.

You said that you think its a great deal at the listed price then why would you try to talk them down? You do understand he needs to make a profit right?

You have right to get a great deal and he has a right to make an honest profit.

If you are getting a great deal as you said then show some respect to the guy for not over pricing it and give him the asking price. Thats my input.

In business There is ..

getting ripped off
getting a fair price
getting a good deal
getting a great deal
bein a cheap *******

You need to figure out where u are at and act accordingly

I agree with the above poster...if you feel it's a great deal already then there's not much else you need to do. If you want to feel like you got a 'super' deal then talk to the guy openly and see if they can do anything for you on the price of accessories or gear...
When I bought my new CBR I would've been much happier on a lower price but I felt that the dealer gave me a good price (in my opinion) which allowed them to also make a profit, and then they gave me a small discount on accessories...not huge but something to make me feel better about the purchase. I'd definitely shop there again because of the overall experience.

Be fair but look him in the eye while you give him your offer and then stop talking and wait.......The first one to start talking will be the one to fold.

I had a teacher who taught a negotiating class back in university 3 semesters ago;

1. walk in and seem uninterested (im not sure how you approached this place, but if you showed you really like the bike then void step 1)
2. make an offer
3. if he/she objects, don't get worked up over it. be cool, calm and collective
4. hand he/she a business card, or your contact information on paper to the sales man, and tell them to think about it, then call you back if anything changes.
5. if all else fails, and you like it, just buy it a week later.

my teacher did this, and ended up getting a fully loaded jeep cherokee that had 5-6K knocked off the price tag.

^^^ I did this, and got $300 knocked off the Imac im currently using from future shop that was last years model.

Thank you for the interest in the GZ250's. Some of the posts are correct. We had those bikes advertised before for around $3100 each, but we discounted them to move them quickly. We do not charge for pdi, or any other made up fee's. All of our prices are plus HST and your plates. The best I can say is we can offer a free helmet from our current stock.

Thank You.

...and with this user working for the motorcycle shop posting on the thread you want a deal on, completely void my post.

if you thought u were gettin a great deal already at 2800...now that they are gonna throw in a helmet from their stock, you better take it before someone else does lol.

and even if u have a helmet already, a rider can always use a spare, incase u drop ur current one or you wanna pick up a passenger =p

I always pay cash, certified cheque, and let them know it before i start to deal.I also let them know I have found other options elsewhere on comparable bikes while letting them know the bike on there shop floor is the one i want but within reason. My last bike took two weeks of looking around and visiting dealers finding comparable bikes going going back and forth as the deals matured.Usually once they know this they do the best the can but you just have to realize that theres a point where they cant go any lower and thats when they start to toss in extras like the helmet or maintenance. This keeps the unit price in line on their paperwork and sweetens the deal for you as best they can.Once they reach this point you have to pick one or walk away.Do i want to spend a little more on the bike i want or a little less on a bike i can live with is generally what it comes down to.

Hey thanks for the advice everyone, and to crow_milo, I will be sending you a pm!

Yeah haha, I respect what is being offered, I was just wondering how you guys barter down a price. Always a good skill to have when I decide to move up to another bike and am looking around. Appreciate the help :]
