Tacoma tailgate locked

My 2013 taco tailgate did not come with a lockable tailgate.I had a "pop n lock" latch installed. It's electric with no key. Locks and unlocks from the fob or door key.
I also have an Extang Solid Fold top. Which is latched.
The tailgate won't unlock. I can lift the solid fold top about an inch against the pressure of the springs. The higher i lift it, the tighter the springs get.
Thoughts?

Can you hear it clunking? That might help narrow it down to an electric or mechanical problem.

I can hear the solenoid moving, but not the linkage. Mechanical i think. Rust on the lock mechanism probably. The spring on the pop n lock is not very strong.

I am assuming you have tried the violent shaking of the tailgate while pressing the button to see if you can take the pressure off/shake things free?

Got the top unlocked. Two screws on the side holding the hinge end cap on. Then the entire hinge slid out the side. Reach in and unlatch. Should be able to get the tailgate cover off now.
