Swingarm Spools? where to get, or a temp solution

hey my new bike doesnt have swingarm spools on it, but i have a set of Hindle Stands.

its alot easier to change my oil and chain with it on the rear stand, but its sunday and theres not really anything open near me that may have spools (I think suzuki newmarket is closed and I live in newmarket so going all the way to toronto just for swingarm spools seems dumb)

is it possible to just use a bolt that will thread into the swingarm as a temp solution, or is there a chance they may snap under the stress (it would just be for today while i do some wrenching). does anyone know of a place in the GTA with a universal Swingarm spool set, or any members have one i could purchase localy?

Or .. place a piece of pipe or rebar etc .. under the swingarm and lift from there with your stands.

Seen it done amany times ..

Or if the diameter of the bar found is small enough to fit through your rear axle, even better!

When you post questions like this, always include the bike you are talking about...I can assume its the only bike in your sig that doenst say sold beside it? If you post what bike I can tell you what size bolt you can use....When people bring me bikes to work on without spools I always just use bolts, so they will work fine, especially if its a Kawi because they use very large M10x1.25 bolts for their spools... Just remember to remove them after your done working on it, or someone will need a new windshield when it flys off your bike...

Unless you use a nut to lock it in place.

Yeah I guess if you want to be cheap and use bolts as spools for the long term....I just remove them, or suggest the customer splurge big time and buy $20 spools if they already own a rear stand like the OP

ya I just wanted something for today, couldnt find any 10mm x1.25 bolts anywhere. (its my zzr600). ill just run out to kahuna after class tomorrow and grab some real spools.

thanks for the help

hard to find because it's a fine thread metric bolt, I could be wrong but Canadian Tire might have them, not in the Automotive section, go the their Hardware section, and look for the metric bolts and nuts, usually on a hanging display, you might be lucky and they will have some, or they will have the coarse threaded ones only....I spent weeks looking for stainless steel allen head socket bolts in that configuration, could not find them, had to get them from the US, and even those were not stainless steel but nickel plated.

Pacific fasteners in Etobicoke has pretty much every bolt Ive ever needed in stainless steel

and they don't have the M10X40 - 1.25 in stainless steel allen head socket cap........

believe me I know, I purchased every other bolt in stainless steel there, they just don't have the fine thread ones....not even in nickel plate, I do believe they had some normal black steel ones (IIRC)

their hours cater to the industrial consumer, not really us guys looking for one of this or that, they are not a store like say Canadian Tire, or any typical store, most times you call place an order and they ship out the order. You could try that, I was fortunate, I went at lunch time.....By the way Al and Len are great guys to deal with

If you go to CT, check both the automotive AND fastener sections. The automotive section is often picked over, with broken packages. The fastener section still has metric stuff (8.8), with brass and stainless too (can't remember if it's metric though). If you go to the Queensway store, you can also check out the nearby Lowes. It's about the same selection, with plastic push rivets and assorted bits.

Have no idea why a smiley face is in there. Eight Point Eight. Thread pitch is a bugbear. Bicycles are the worst.

I never had a problem with them, I used to have 2 shops just down the street from them when we were in Etobicoke...Your right you cant go in there an buy one or 2 bolts, minimum in those days was $5...It was usually one hand full of bolts is $5 and 2 hand fulls is $10..lol Anyways they were always a good help and very useful for me, better then the limited selection of black oxide bolts that rust instantly at Canadian Tire etc...

I checked CT, they had almost no metric bolts, no M10s

Im picking up a pair of spools that'll hopefully work for me today.

EDIT: r6rollin came though, thanks for the free spools! stand up guy.
