So I have had my G for 5 years, got my M2 last year.

I have been calling for quotes about getting insured on a SV650 thinking that it cant be THAT much more expensive than my 250r currently...

Boy was I wrong, the lowest quote with just liability was $3770... I'm paying $1653 on my 250 for the same coverage.

I don't understand how anyone under 25 can use this as a "starter" bike, its ridiculously expensive.

I have called SF which I am currently with and Riders Choice so far....I asked the people at SF if getting my M would make a difference in price and was told that its my age and CC taken to account not my license class

I have one accident where I was rear ended at a red light in my car, and no other convictions or suspensions on my record. In other words completely clean.

This post is half rant half asking for advice, is there any hope or am I stuck on my 250 until I turn 25?

Try statefarm for a gsxr600 / zx6r...any 599CC SS bikes...it should be cheaper.

The SV 650 falls in the 600 CC - 749 CC class with SF...reason for higher premiums.

Call Desjardins

So far the lowest for just liability has been around 3450 on a GSX-R600 with SF, so the cc did have an impact which I find odd when dealing with an "SS".

Gonna try a few more places then cry in a corner.

Tried Desjardins, 3889 for the 650, they dont do the gixxer.

I'm 23 and have had my G for 5 years. I also only have my M2.
I started on a 250 Suzuki Marauder and then upgraded to my currently bike Yamaha FZ6. 2007.
It's classified as a 599cc sport tourer but trust me it's not slow by any means :p

I'm currently also with state farm and for just liability they're charging me about 175 a month...so 2100yr

Still high but better then your quotes and this is the only sport bike before 25 that I've found to be a decent'ish rate.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to my engineer discount with TD MM, I pay 1300$ a year for my 2010 SV650 with full coverage

29 years old
G over 10 years but just transferred from Quebec
M2
no claims
2 minor offences

I can count myself lucky. It's funny how insurance varies between provinces. In Quebec, the SV650 was a real beginners bike. Any gixxer with no experience would result in insane insurance price.

TD, StateFarm, Desjardins are all out of the question..

However I got a quote for about 2344 from a broker who's name I cannot remember (Paper is at home). So far that's the best quote for an SV.

The FZ6 might be an option, thanks for that JayG :)

Thanks for your suggestions guys, I hate the insurance but I love to ride.

Isn't the SV considered a standard class bike?

Shouldn't it be cheaper since it's less powerful than a 600 SS all things considered?

Yes but SF goes by CC

Try Dalton Timmis insurance, I got a quote for a brand new one for 3800/year (Full Coverage)which is pretty cheap considering my age
-20, only have been licensed for 2 years, no claims.

just for comparison.

G five years, M2 three years, one ticket, 23 years old
cbr 125r 1200 per year
quoted on an sv 650 at 2600 per year

insurance blows eh?

24 + M2 (2years) + 05 FZ6 + TDMM ($1M Liability + fire/theft/vandal) = $86 with auto and home combined.

Agreed on the FZ6 being the only sport(ier) bike with proper rates before 25 =)

I got a quote on my 696 from SF. $169/mo.

I wanted to see how much more it would be for an R6. Stupidly it ended up being much less at $125/mo for a much faster bike.
