SV650 Track Day & Racers - Clip Ons and rear sets Questions

I have purchased a 2003 SV650 ($1000 keep that in mind) and can't wait to get out for some track days next year. I have replaced a few parts here and there on it that were damaged from the previous owner have a few offs (throttle tube, brake lever and other small bits)

Now that the bike has had the once over and is ready for spring with the addition of water wetter I have a question about a few parts for the spare stock pile.

Currently the bike is running the factory clip ons, these would require the top of the triple to be removed to replace a clip on in the event of an off. What are other SV650 riders using? I was looking at the woodcraft or vortex clip ons for ease of replacement in the event of something bad. My main question is currently the stock clip ons have 2" of rise and some degree of angle. Vortex has a zero rise 7 degree clip on option, I think this will contact my fairings as I measured the gap between the bottom of the grip and fairing and it was 2".

Should I run the woodcrafts in a 1", 1.5" or 2" rise, are the factory clip ons resilient and not that difficult to track side swap? Let me know what you are running and your luck.

Also, what are you guys running for rear sets? I have been looking at vortex there as well for the replacement parts instead of the entire unit.

Is the cost worth it? what do factory clip ons and rear sets go for on the used market? Just looking to have a few spares for my track day fun.

Sorry for the long winded questions. Thanks in advance.

Thanks KneeDragger. I should have said the bike was previously a SOAR race bike and does have the relocation plates (up and back) for the rearsets and solid knurled foot pegs. From what I can tell they are factory rear sets slightly modified. For the cost of aftermarket rearsets I can probably purchase 2 sets of factory replacements.

More important question above is what are the clip on set up other SV riders are using.

Just stick with the stock rear sets and relocation plates.

I use woodcraft ones on my 400 (same forks as the SV) they are cheap and easy to install/fix if you crash.

I just picked one up an SV in the fall. I asked the owner about using aftermarket clip-ons and he told me most guys just run the stock ones. The aftermarket clip-ons are normally lower than stock and will put more weight on your wrists. I'm just going to ebay some stock clips-ons as spares.

Changing the stock clip-ons is simple so long as you have a front stand that goes into the steering stem. If you don't have one then add that to your Christmas list ;).

That being said, if you really want aftermarket ones go for it.

I don't own an sv, however every stock clip on I've had I loosen the clamps on the forks and slide them down to replace a clip on, not remove the top triple. Takes maybe 15 minutes.

You don't need a stand to replace clipons or remove the top triple.

The only way I can see to do it on the SV is by popping the top triple plate, The SV only has one pinch bolt so it can't be pulled off with out; has to be slide up the top of the fork leg. Dricked enlighten me if I am missing something would love to know any tips or tricks.

I think I'll be using stock clip ons, they seem to be cheap and plentiful on ebay about $25US. I'll probably stick with factory rear sets as well, I have the relocation plates and rigid pegs so I'll have to keep an eye out for a complete set or a bunch of replacement parts should they be needed.

He means loosen both top and bottom triple pinch bolts, slide both forks down below the top triple. Then do what ya gotta do to replace clip ons. But maybe popping top triple off is easier. I dunno.

My SV was easy, but it had keyless ignition.

Brad, this is something you should only have to do once, on initial install. (Unless you really bin it). I liked the vortex ones, they come with a one piece ring. Woodcrafts are split ring (2pcs) and can be a bit of a ***** to install. The only advantage the woodcrafts have, is that you can get risers for them.

Thanks guys. I feel sliding the forks or removing the top yolk would be about the same amount of effort.

Steve, If I go aftermarket I'd have to go woodcraft as I need at least an inch of rise for clearance. Once the two piece ring is installed it should just be bars that need replacing if there is an off.

Yep, just pop the top triple and slide the clipons off. Two pinch bolts and the steering head nut to remove it. The lower triple will hold the forks in place so weight doesn't need to be removed.

That was my logic and thinking. Glad it makes sense to someone else. :)

Would be great to see you at Shannonville...what's your rental fee? hhaha Or just swap bikes and a bunch of cash since I crash a lot.
