decided on the next tires Dunlop Sportmax Q2
decided on the front size. 120/70-17
not sure about the rear size. some recomend 170/60-17. a lot recomend 160/60-17(stock size).
anyone with more tire knowledge want to chime in?
stock size wheel.

The stock size is 160/60zr17, you can fit a 170 but it will be pinched and look smaller than a 160. Some sv owners do a 180 conversion from a forum member called svxr from svrider.com, but the stock size works best you turn in faster with the stock size. Good thing going to a 120/70 front, it corrects the speedo a little, I will be doing the same thing, but I'm going with metzeler sportec m5, cant wait I don't trust my stock tires anymore lol

thats what im leaning towards too. but when a reputable name and a racer suggests something different, i thought i would research on my own as well. but so far, its been only the guys that want a fatter tire on the back are happy with 170. i dont care about the look. function before looks.

Like danesetti said, the 170 will be pinched/mushroomed. Even the stock 160, depending on which tire and profile, is slightly pinched compared to a 5.0" wheel.

Stock is 160 Wide.....so a 170 WIDE might fit just fine and clear the chain......if you went 180 wide, you would need a wheel swap.

Perhaps this racer is suggesting going with a 170 wide for this reason?!

Why mess around with this stuff? Just go 120/160

Unless you're doing the rear swingarm and frt end conversion to make a Superbike SV, stick with stock. There is nothing wrong with it.

he suggested the 170 in order to get more contact patch when leaned over and also making the sv a little taller from the back.
im guessing we can do other things with the shock or the dogbones to make it taller from the back and just go with 160.

i also heard that the Dunlop Q2 usually are a little less wide than other manufacturers.. maybe thats got something to do with the racer's recomendation as well

What is your goal with this? Will you be track riding, racing or street?

I think at the end he better be doing all of it.....this might be one of the better budget built SV's out there in the GTA after We'r done with it.

Great, good luck with the project. Let's see some pics when it's all done.
Mine was pretty sweet and I sorta regret selling it....

what did you do to yours? pics? upgrades? info? some inspiration would help!

It was an 05 with the following mods for raincg; alum fairing stay and sub-frame, 05 GSXR front end (sometimes), if not I was using old F3 forks modified by John Sharrard which provide the external rebound adjustment, Ohline rear shock with remote adjuster, Yoyodyne slipper clutch, keyless ignition, braided brake lines, full Hindle exhaust, Vortex rear sets, Vortex clip-ons, Power commander with two maps (one for pump gas and one for MR9 or 12). Armour Bodies bodywork.

My $0.02,
Stick with the stock 160/60-17, the bike is pretty light and won't work an oversize tire enough to get much heat into it.
This is 100% counter to your goal, which (if you're a street rider) is to run a tire that warms up quickly, and works well in the cold and wet.
Invest your money instead into one of the new top-quality high-tech tires that claim to do just that.
You'll still run with your buddies in the corners, don't worry...
Plus you'll enjoy your bike more, and feel confident, especially if you're doing just short trips, commuting etc.
Regards

My Jevco premium went from $900 to $1300 this season for my 03 SV. Switched to Primmum, back to $900.
