Suspended licence in NY State - Need some advice

Hey guys, so it looks like my licence has been suspended in the NY State from a speeding ticket I got and forgot to pay back in 2003. Does anyone have experience with this type of situation? How can I get my licence reinstated there?

Don't mean to threadjack, but on a similar note my girlfriend recently got a speeding ticket in Niagara NY for doing 48km/h over. What do you think the best course of action is? I don't know of any recommended paralegals in that area to deal with it, should she just hire a dude to go in and plead to lesser fine and be done with it? Dont' think she likes the idea of driving down there by herself for early resolution (she even had me come to court with her when she was a witness)

How did you find out your license was suspended in NY? I definitely have at least one unpaid speeding ticket in that state issued around the same time. So far it's never affected me in any way but maybe I just don't know my license is suspended?

I have no idea how to deal with something like this, that's why I ended up getting my licence suspended there in the first place. I guess calling some traffic lawyer or something like that.

I went to the US and I got pulled over and the cop told me that my licence is suspended there and that I should deal with this otherwise I could get in real trouble. The guy was nice enough to let me go. If you ever got a speeding ticket there which you didn't deal with, chances are your licence is suspended in the NY state.

How can a Canadian license be suspended by another country?

Just pay the damn fine and be done with it. Even if she sends a cheque for $20 a month.
Next thing you know the US will put you on a no fly list and you are sitting in some jail after you are printed of course.

Canada/US has had a reciprocal agreement on fines and suspensions for several years now. You need to clear up cross border issues before they become complicated.
Getting caught under suspension in NY state could get you a warning, or if they consider you a risk to pay (since you didnt and are suspended) a night in jail to appear before a judge.
The US system works like a glacier, it can take years to catch up, but it will.

Guess I'd better be careful then lol. I've been back n forth to NYC at least 20 times since then.

Well, tickets recieved in those states that have reciprocal agreements with Ontario will directly show up on your record here.

I've read an articles once or a forum, don't remember where someone also got ticketed in NY state and decided to fight it. Well instead of driving back and forth in order to deal with this, he wrote a letter requesting for an alternative which was two parking tickets for the equal total amount as one ticket he received. Paid parking tickets and he is good to go. So all they care is MULA MULAAA!!

Welcome to the club!

Got an improper license plate ticket near Batavia in 2009, which I forgot about. Was pulled over again in 2011 and informed my license was suspended and received a ticket for that.

The issue with New York is you have to deal with each ticketing county separately. I tried getting a hold of the Batavia court house to settle the initial ticket for two weeks. No one called me back. Needless to say, my license is still suspended as far as I know.

I go exactly the speed limit and not a mph more in New York now :)

if NY is like MI eventually you will get a letter from the secretary of state informing you that your drivers license is under suspension in that state
funny thing though in MI at least they have a kind of statute of limitations on fines so after about ten years the SOS sends out another letter telling you that your license is reinstated even with the outstanding fines unpaid VERY unlike the Ont system

Hire a lawyer in NY state to deal with it. Pay the damm fine and move on. You don't want to have a warrant out in US.

So, for those of you interested...
I had to get a list of my suspensions and called each town court in their specific counties (3 total). They were pretty nice and got my tickets down to parking tickets, which will not affect my Ontario driving record. Paid those and paid $30 re-instatement fee of my license in the state of NY.

If you get a speeding ticket in NY state, call the town court and see if you can get it down to a non-moving violation (this will not affect your driving record here), then pay the fine.

3 tickets?
It just seems to be common sense not to speed in the US when you have a Canadian plate.
They know you are easy game and will just pay it since you are not likely to take it to court due to distance.

How can they apply a fee to reinstate a license that has nothing to do with them whatsoever?

3 tickets over a period of 10 years. It can happen....

It's all about money, like you said. Had to pay to basically have the right to drive in NY state again.
