Sur Ron Electric Bikes

I am the proud owner of a Talaria Sting and just this week got it ORV green plated. I used to ride and race Suzuki RM and RMX 250s 30 years ago. In July I bought a Sting from Langs and I am glad I did. I have never had this much fun standing up and as a bonus have lost 20 pounds. In 2022 I competed in 3 Offroad Ontario XC races against ICE bikes where the bike performed much better than I did. Since then I have been riding/training hard, bought a second battery and a bunch of performance upgrades to feed my addiction. For 2023 I am determined to kick some ass in the old fat guy class at OO XC races.

If those can be plated, I can see those being stupid fun on the trails. When I reached out to OFTR they never got back to me about the SUR RON bikes being allowed on their trails.

1st post and talking about how great a product is?

There's no reason they wouldn't be. You could ride one of the KTM battery powered Freerides so these would be fine too.

Isn't the stumbling block insurance? Don't you need insurance on the trails? Are insurance companies writing policies for electric bikes? Insurance for <200cc is almost unobtanium for reasons, I would be surprised (but happy) if it was available for electric bikes (and even happier if the price was reasonable).

Good point. Insurance would be the issue but I believe you can get insurance for the KTM and Zero bikes. I haven't tried though.

Interesting. One of our mechanics at work has Zero street model - plate, insurance, etc. - he commutes to work.
Now Zero has somewhat dirt worthy looking bike in the lineup (dual sport like CRF300L?), which I think should be insurable and road worthy.
Question to all dirt bike riders - how to you think such bike would stack up against popular dirt trail bikes? Even comparable?
Anyone here has this model for some feedback?

P.S. sorry for the drift in the thread, not a sur ron lol...

It sounds like @TekMason was able to get his plated - curious if Langs helped out with that?

Neither my Talaria or Surron light bee models had a 17 digit vin and at the moment I haven't seen anyone writing offroad policies for them. (To legally ride the OFTR trails they require you to carry an ownership, green plate and insurance) Racing the events would be no issue though.

It seems that most companies already don't want to insure anything 150cc and under off road - so I'm not sure how they will classify these electric bikes in the future. But recently I see that OFTR has been in talks with Surron, they just came on board as a sponsor so it seems that they are trying to figure something out?

Read that the Super Bee, or Killer Bee, or whatever the latest model's name is will be going for $7,999.

All of Zero's line up (and Energica for that matter) are street legal and can be plated and insured, but not every insurance company provides. Can't speak to KTM though. My insurance is basically the same as my last bike, the Ninja500. Annoying point; I work for a bank and they offer a niiiiice discount on their products but don't recognise my Zero. 🙄

I just finished crawling out of a rabbit hole researching electric trials bikes.

Seriously considered the Electric Motion ePure Race, mainly because it has a clutch lever. But the price though... $15K CDN. If it was $5K cheaper, I'd be all over it.

There are lots of trails here that prohibit the use of gas powered vehicles, mainly due to the noise spooking horses. But they do allow eBikes, so I am assuming electric motorcycles fall under the same category. Also, I can practice in my backyard without the neighbours complaining as well...

Yamaha has been talking about coming out with one for years, but it's been nothing but vaporware. Would prefer something that can be serviced locally. Electric Motion dealers are 4 hours away in both directions from where I live.

Mecatecno is releasing a lineup soon. Much lighter, better batteries etc.

Admit Jet Armor, is interesting. Seems like a much better bike with no needed upgrades at about half the price.
This segment is getting interesting and is developing much faster than ice bikes.
