Sur Ron Electric Bikes

Any of you had any experience with these Sur Ron electric bikes (mopeds? motorcycles?)? I saw a few Youtube videos on them probably 5 years back of someone in Florida modifying them to go like 80mph but thought they were some expensive Alibaba junk. Maybe they are marketing more but I'm starting to see them online more and more and have my interest.

$4-6k CAD is kind of steep for something not street legal, but for a 100lbs, 100km cruising range, 80kph top speed, seems like the ultimate woods bike. Not that I need anymore toys but its got me thinking...

I saw something online about they cant even green plate them because they have no vin, curious if anyone knows how true that is?

There was a GTAMer that had it...but he changes his handle often and I don't know who he is now. STB.

I checked whether these are legal on SCORRA lands...they are not. They're not plated or insured. Basically electric mountain bikes that go fast.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

here is some local content - add pedals to make it street/trails legal here in CAN

Not legal in Ontario. If it has the ability to exceed 500 watts, it is not an ebike. Now you could try to argue in court that your 3000 watt electric motor was limited to 500 watts but good luck with that. It would need a good lawyer and expert witness to testify that you complied.

"
  • an electric motor not exceeding 500 watts
  • no modifications to the motor to allow it to exceed a power output greater than 500 watts and an assisted speed greater than 32 km/h"

Chances are a cop won't care if it looks like a ebike they aren't going to bother checking specs if you aren't doing anything stupid and stay under 30kmph

Agree. Under 30 km/h and not on a sidewalk or bike path and you are probably not going to be bothered. Get a cop having a bad day though and you are looking at a $6000 bill with little chance of beating it.

Hmmmm... I was just hoping I could slap a green plate on one and rip it around on rail trails and around town since thats legal around here. Doesn't appear to be the case.

I like the moped pedals but realistically you'd never be on the thing and only want to go 30kph.

I emailed SCORRA a handful of times with this exact question. Crickets.

Did you see the video above with him pedaling? The pedals are sadly a gimick to comply with the law. It would be a far better vehicle with pegs. I think they would be awesome for a lot of reasons if someone could solve the green plate and insurance issue. What is dirtbike insurance worth on other 6 hp bikes?

Oh yeah thats what I meant by liking them - liking them as a way to skirt the law.

CycleCruza has one of these. He puts it through the paces. Expensive for what it is. Whenever my Ryobi lawnmower dies I always think "thank God I don't own an e-bike."

This is the first place I'm mentioning this anywhere but me and Talaria Canada have just partnered up with support to my racing efforts! Their bike is quite similar to the Sur ron, the bike they are sending me hasn't arrived yet but I'll be doing some reviews and sharing some of my experience with it on Instagram and my fb page once its here... really the bike will be used most around the house and some open areas around town as well as in the paddocks of race tracks we go to.

If I was looking for an e-bike I'd lean towards one of Bohumil Mrazek's bikes. He been fabricating MTB frames for years and makes them himself vs. sourcing them from the Orient.

There are allot of them on the DIY Electric motorcycle group that I'm apart of. Lots of people putting bigger motors, controllers, batteries etc. to get to motorcycle speeds but then don't bother upgrading the brakes, forks, frame, etc. Most come from mountain bikes judging by the gear that they wear.

Langs sells this one.

I owned 2 surron's, one with the rst fork and then the newer fastace. After that we added a talaria as well. They are basically expensive pit bikes unless you throw a lot - and I mean a lot - of money at them. Sold within a year after getting some good use out of them. They are fun toys in stock form no doubt, but they are far too expensive (especially now the prices have been hiked many times since we got the first surron) for what they are. Mainly used them on private property to mess around the yard/pitbike tracks

Range is very poor if you ride them hard. There's a lot of cheap parts on them that need upgrading immediately if you are going to treat it like a dirtbike. Be prepared to fix/upgrade things often if you're beating on it.

They were fun to ride around the neighborhood and parks but that's not exactly legal so there's that.. If they were priced more along the lines of a crf110 I think it would be a no brainer to use one as a pitbike though.

Lots of good info here. I guess the upgrade thing makes sense because online you never see a stock one...

Honestly not being able to green plate it killed the dream for me.

It's all legal until you get caught...then...bend over.

I am the proud owner of a Talaria Sting and just this week got it ORV green plated. I used to ride and race Suzuki RM and RMX 250s 30 years ago. In July I bought a Sting from Langs and I am glad I did. I have never had this much fun standing up and as a bonus have lost 20 pounds. In 2022 I competed in 3 Offroad Ontario XC races against ICE bikes where the bike performed much better than I did. Since then I have been riding/training hard, bought a second battery and a bunch of performance upgrades to feed my addiction. For 2023 I am determined to kick some ass in the old fat guy class at OO XC races.
