Suomy helmets

Time for a new helmet and I've always used either Joe Rocket or AGV. I'm a size S and have been satisfied with both and have worn for 12 hr days. Both were around the 200 dollar range so I guess could be called a mid range helmet. I've never had what could be called a premium helmet but I see GPBikes has awesome sale on their Suomys. Anyone know if I will find the fit similar? Reviews claim them to be on the noisy side and the visor replacement to be a bit fiddly, but super light. Not sure if I should go for one, or stick with what I know in a Joe Rocket. 200 is my budget and so Suomy usually out of my range but not at these sale prices. Anyone have a Suomy and been disappointed? Thanks

check the review section - there is a thread on these helmets.

i've been wearing nothing by suomy's for the past 5 yrs - I like it.

when shopping for a new helmet I found the Suomy helmets to be heavier than the Joe Rockets. They did have pretty patterns though. Ultimately I found the Joe Rocket 1500 fit my head better than the Suomy, and that was the deciding factor, doesn't matter the price of the helmet, if it doesn't fit it's best to move on to one that does. The Joe Rockets also had the ECE rating, the Suomy was Dot only.

one thing to look at when a helmet is on sale is the manufacture date. not saying that a helmet will go bad sitting in a box (there will be some aging of the styrofoam, but UV and the acids in your sweat are the big killers) but maybe a helmet made to a newer standard might be better, bonus if it's cheaper.

Also price of the helmet doesn't always mean it's better, if it's meeting a particular standard (DOT, SNELL, ECE) the only difference is going to be features such as how light the helmet is (neck has to hold it up), feature such as built in sunglasses, custom fit adjustment, etc. Then there's the cost of accessories. On some of the more expensive helmets the cost of the visor can be the same price as a lower priced helmet. Another consideration is how things like visors attach, some are notorious for breaking if not attached correctly or being particularly difficult to attach/take off.

I just bought a Suomy helmet and love it.

Btw, GP Bikes has the helmets at $199 on special right now.

I have a Suomy Apex and have found it quieter than my Shoei Qwest. Nice anti-fog coating on visor even if a bit hard to remove. Also much lighter and it is ECE certified. Not sure how the Apex compares to the Vandal, but they are a quality manufacturer. I was told (but haven't confirmed) that they manufacture helmets for Ducati.

i also had the Suomy Apex. compared to my current AGV Grid, it was lighter and quieter. also made in Italy (AGV Grid made in China) if that matters to you

things my AGV Grid is better for: easier to change visor, better ventilation

I have the vandal. It is very loud. I'm not a big fan of the graphics but i got it for free so i can't complain. The helmet is very light though so i did like that when i went touring with it.

For $200 i would likely buy it again. The other helmet i was thinking about was that Kaos one for $300 which is a pound lighter i believe.

Ya I was looking at the Kaos helmets as well.
Didnt fit too well with me though. It was pretty uncomfortable for me.

I've had 2, a spec 1r and now an apex. The spec 1r was amazing, very nice inside material and aerodynamics. Such a light helmet too. The apex is almost as good but feels a bit louder. The visor is a pain in the butt to change though.

My dad just got the vandal from gp bikes and I found it was heavier and much louder, but still a nice quality helmet for $200.

I have an Apex. It's nice and light, was quiet at first but now it is loud. It fits a bit smaller than other helmets. I think I like it most for how light it is.
