Stupid - stupid - stupid

I have a 08 Shadow 750DC and when I took it out a while ago it was kind of squirrely. I don't get to ride it that often but the bike was backfiring some fierce, it was losing power on acceleration and it would even cut out on idle. So like a meat head I got carried away. Tank off -cleaned the carbs -changed the plugs- checked the electrical -you name it.

Then it dawned on me. Though I did put fuel stabilizer in the tank and it was topped up. I was still running on the gas from last winter.Drained the gas - put in a fresh tank of 91 and problems gone.

Lesson here is -the simplest solution is sometimes the right one.

When members come to this section, I always tell them to start with the basics.

Some of the problems are caused by the most minute of details and could save u alot of headache if they tackle them 1st.

But u sure did learn alot today. You've learnt what not to do next time :D

Simple solutions, while being the most annoying, are the best. I just finished doing jets on my carbs, start it up and it stays at 9000 rpm! So I give it the wtf, go back to it the next day because I didn't want to ness anything up by working frustrated. Turns out the the clamp holding the carbs to the engine was holding the throttle open. Adjust and runs great! You never think of little stuff until your too freaked out to think anything else!

kiss= keep it simple stupid lol not you just mantra

Just thought I'd share my experience with keeping it simple. I bought an '83 Virago from my brother in law for 300$. Nothing fancy, but it was my first bike and he basically gave it to me. It always had an issue starting and he told me that it was common with that bike. I did some research and yes, the '83 Virago's had some kind of starter issues.

Now fast forward about a month and it just won't start now. I get peeved and decide to sell it for 300$ to recoup my cost at least. Guy contacts me and I tell him about the issue. He comes down and takes a look. Then he asks if there's a bike shop close by that we could go pick up a new spark plug. We go to Cycle Source, get back and put the new plug in.

The F'ING bike started up with NO PROBLEMS!!!!

Me being me, I couldn't back out of the deal, but man was I ever TICKED off.

Good story. Don't put 91 in a Shadow though. It is a waste of money.

My buddy called CAA because his Shadow stopped after he filled it up with gas. It wouldn't turn over and he was going to be late for his date.
I popped by to see if I could help. After pulling the air filter out I decided to check the fuel petcock. He switched it to reserve as he had run really low on fuel. After filling up he switched it to OFF instead of ON (or Reserve). Like a typical Shadow it fired up no problems after that.

My buddy cancelled the CAA call and made it to his date on time.
