Stop Sign Boredom

At lights and stop signs I practice not putting my feet down and balancing the bike (full stop of course). I count how long I can hold the bike before moving on. This is how you know you've been riding too long and are bored. I seem to be able to hold the bike balanced for as long as I want to. Makes me want to try a Trials bike...

Also made me wonder why motorcycle manufacturers don't look into gyroscopic technology to keep the bike upright without taking feet off pegs at lights and stop signs. They've gone nuts with electronics, why stop now?

Not suggesting anyone try this.

I don't get bored at stop signs on a bike. It's good practice. Mirror check. Signal turn. Stop with the front of the tire just behind the line. Foot down. Look left, right, left. Analyze if the way is clear. Foot up. Blindspot check. Begin moving forward. Analyze if some ^$$@## is going to smoke me. Make my turn.

It's probably not difficult for a cop to see if your front tire and spokes stop moving. Lots of accidents are caused by people not yielding the right of way when they're supposed to.

The drivers to the left or right don't worry me as much as the one behind. Is he assuming I'll roll through just like he intends to do, if he even sees me.

You can do all of this while improving your balance skills as well.

I see Zach Courts tries the same on his daily commute..on every ride...at every stop sign. Here is one of his failed attempts:

Trials riders can balance the bike forever.

As long as you come to a full stop, why not practice / learn / improve that extra skill?

Bonus is if you do see someone approaching you fast from the rear, you're already in jet mode.

Move out of the GTA.

Cool, find me a 2 bedroom townhouse w/ finished basement & garage for $1,500. And pay my increased gas bills for the commute.

Pros > Cons currently. I can live without practicing my balancing act at every stop light. Never mind that i'm on motorcycles all season for work.

Cons: Getting smoked in the GTA

I guess trials riders will get this thread...why not practice a skill to improve your overall skills? Rhetorical question.

Even ATGATT in a controlled environment. It goes without saying learning how to balance a motorcycle is kind of THE fundamental of riding. Learning how to compete with a gyroscopic motorcycle using your own skills will make you a next level rider.

Coming to a complete stop in classic trials is a penalty of 5 points. The SOCT uses no-stop rules.
Modern trials rules are used by the ATA in CMA sanctioned events. That style of rider is called hopper.
Equally fun!
