hi, last month i was pulled over in Durham region by two cops. they wanted to inspect my DOT helmet with a stick on mowhalk on it. they advised me that it was illegal as it comprimised the helmet so i pulled it off right there infront of them. when i asked them how it compromised it they couldn't answer n just said to remove it or i'll be pulled over every time i pass a cop. They didn't ticket me and everyone else i've asked they said they never heard of it being illegal...... anyone have any info on this??

I do believe it is illegal, There are some companies that advise not putting any sticker or adhesives on their helmets.

There are people here that no more then I do on the subject and sure they will chime in for the reason.

Heard of it happening in Guelph. somple post law please, but I remember something about having smooth helmet. But I also have never heard cops complain about com gear (g4 for example) on helmet which is either clamped on or stuck on by adhesive pad. My understanding is helmet itself must be intact and not modified. How a mow hawk attached by suction cups messes up a helmet is beyond me and I also know most cops don't bother with it.

I don't think it would compromise the helmet in any meaningful way unless it used adhesives that were detrimental to the helmet's shell. You do look like a goof though..

Highway Traffic Act, R.R.O. 1990, REGULATION 610, SAFETY HELMETS

So if the helmet has to be SMOOTH, would that not make all the Icon Alliance (and other similar) helmets illegal for having raised vents and air paths?

don't shoot the messenger. the law is there, whether it is actively enforced is a different matter.

it's on of those, while you're pulled over, "here's a side of fries with your shake" kinda ticket.

The way you get through a hypothetical ticket that were issued on those grounds is similar to that for many other things: the helmet passed its official certification tests (DOT, ECE, Snell, etc) with those raised vents in place and therefore conforms to the required standards, regardless of the exact way that the HTA is worded. It did not pass those certification tests with the stick-on Mohawk in place, nor did it pass those certification tests with your Go-pro mount or communication system mount in place. Whether those accessories would actually have any real world adverse effect is quite another matter, but the point is that there is not a piece of paper stating that it is in compliance.

Camera mounts and comm system mounts tend to be pretty discreet, but stick-on Mohawks are not ...

BINGO!

Except that having a GoPro stuck to the top of your helmet is far from discreet

I've been pulled over for my mohawk. The officer shut up pretty quick when I pulled it off (suction cup mount). I've also been 'warned' about it by officers beside me in traffic, though in both cases where that happened neither officer specifically told me to remove it even after I asked if they wanted me to.

As noted above, the HTA states that the helmet must have a smooth outer shell and be undamaged. It does not prohibit attaching anything to the helmet, only that it remain undamaged. I asked a sargent from the motorcycle division about it and he felt that there was nothing wrong with it.

Thanks people for all the responses. It was truly helpful! Yes I may look like a "goof" wearing it. But I'm proud of my goofyness. Plus the ladies love it... Wink wink

Sounds like a pissing contest. One that you're not likely to win. Helmets with vents are still smooth on the outside, and passed their certification like that. Adding mohawks, spikes, or other useless crap just helps you stand out in a crowd. If you want to get noticed, glue on as much crap as you can!

Then when you're standing in court while the prosecutor and officer discuss his 'evidence', and present it to the JP (who will largely make his/her decision based on what he had for breakfast), you can tell them that some random Sgt from the motorcycle division likes your pink mohawk.

I saw another guy in a thread saying he was wearing a cookie monster helmet, I dont know if hes gotten flak for it or not but Im gonna assume he hasnt. I think U just ran into a playa hater with a badge, wifey probly wont let him have a bike :0)
