Static Wheel Balancer

I've been doing my bike tire changes in my garage for the last 3 years and I've never balanced them. So far I've only lined up the valve core on the wheel with the dot on the tire. I haven't felt anything unusual on my bike at slow or fast (track) speeds.

I'm interested in buying a static tire balancer, I'd like to hear your opinions on the type you're using. How it performs, price, & where you bough it from... I see some cheap ones on ebay for like $25-$50 made in China, I'm wondering if they're worth a try or a waste of money.

I am aware of the rear wheel balance controversy, so please don't hijack thethread. I'm mostly looking to balance the front, but I'd like to experiment myself with balancing the rear to see if there really is a difference or not.

Static balances are very simple. a stand, a straight bar and 2 bearings. You can make your own for very cheap as well....

I have this from HF
Works great for front tires.

I bought a cheap one from China, $40 shipped to my house. I'll have to make the stand myself though, probably from wood or make a modification to the front stand.

Hey dj where do you buy the sticky balancer weights?

i made my own, a 2x4, and 4 x $1.79 ball bearings from princess auto. pull the seals off the ball bearings and let them soak in varsol/kerosene for a couple hours (grease adds too much resistance to the bearings), 4 bolts, 8 washers and a couple screws to keep the 2x4's together. Exact same idea as the pic above for less than $10. Works very well, just throw a little WD-40 and spin the bearings before you balance to make sure they aren't sticky. sensitive to about 1/16 (1/4 of a wheel weight) of an ounce, more than enough for a balanced tire.

for the record, not balancing your tires can be very dangerous, makes sure you do.

I use the balancer made by NoMar.They're made made in America and you can also by larger size cones for balancing rear wheels off Ducatis, BMW's and Honda VFR's.They also sell stick on weights in a variety of colours.

use your axle and a vise. nothing to buy from china.
+1
Using my axle and a jackstand from a car worked well. I was able to freely rotate the wheel and get the heaviest point
