State Farm - Returning Policy Slips?

I'm cancelling my State Farm insurance, since TD is offering me a much lower rate.

State Farm is asking that I return my insurance slips. Problem is, the slip is in my bike which is stored away in a garage (with little chance of access).

Are they allowed to withhold my cancellation because I can't return my insurance slip? I can't find any such stipulation in the state-farm documents I own. Anybody care to comment?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tell them you lost it maybe? It's a piece of paper...I printed mine off an email my broker sent me, it's not like it's a card that states it's property of the insurance company.

Document all interactions in case you have to fight it.

They're protecting against fraud - i know how hard it is to believe it happens in the motorcycling world, but it could easily.

I've never heard of any place colllecting slips - well, from one guy I knew but he was shady with insuring and cancelling, and jumping from company to company and often with the same bike. Basically, they didn't believe him and believed he was scamming slips (my take).

Call them tell them its in the bike tucked away for the winter and you cant get to it. I have never been asked for my slips and doubt that they can withhold the renewal. If they insist ask them who they are sending around to help you clear the garage.

I don't understand why they'd even bother - when they have your cancellation in writing & signed, how would they be liable for any subsequent fraud?

I "believe" the term fraud was used in the context, a person gets insurance and the slip, (indicating they have insurance), then cancel insurance keep the slip and if stopped by police they produce it as proof of insurance. Generally the police don't contact the company to see if the policy is indeed "in force".

They can and do actually contact the company. Either way, it would be out of State Farm's hands.

In the UK police can tell by the Reg if a car is insured(well the driver who is insured) or not. Is Canada not the same do they not link up to insurance db's

In Canada they have it but not for Motorcycles nor commercial vehicles.

Man, I must've gotten lucky then. My friend stopped paying his insurance, and was of course using the slip as proof (although never got pulled over). I was driving him around in his car (borrowed it earlier, then picked him up), and got pulled over because of an expired plate. Must've been a new guy, because he gave my *friend* a ticket, even though I was driving, and I don't think he even asked for insurance.

To be clear, are the databases linked such that they can see if a policy has been cancelled, or do they just see when it was supposed to expire?

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone!

This was what ended up happening. The insurance slip usually comes in 2 pieces. I had one in my bike and one at home. A clerk at the insurance office, told me to return the one I had on hand. They took it, cancelled my policy without asking any questions.

In the end, the whole situation seemed pretty pointless, because now I still have an invalid slip in my bike (in storage). But at least I got it sorted out.
