Stand up desks

Ive been readins research after research about how bad it is to sit down to prolonged house and hence thinking of investing in a stand up desk. The ones that are adjustable so you can both work sitting down or standing up.

The got for about $800 (with the chair) and i was wondering if anyone uses them in the office and whether they make a difference or not?

I do because I have chronic back and shoulder pain. At home I have a GeekDesk base with an Ikea top on it, and that ran me about $800 back then, give or take.

At work I have a tabletop sit-stand desk by VariDesk: http://ca.varidesk.com/varidesk-pro-plus-36

At Ikea you can now buy an electric sit-stand desk for $600: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S49022524/

When standing, alternate between standing on both feet, left foot raised up on a small box/stool and right foot up. Sit for 30-45 minutes and switch to standing. YMMV. :)

There's lots of info out there on this topic. Nobody is designed to stay put in one position for too long.

Good post.

Standing for too long can have it's problems as well. The thing about being in a place for too long is to keep switching it up every half hour - 45 mins or so. Stand, sit, alternate legs, etc.

We've recently had treadmills installed. Yeah. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

My current project has them throughout. Made by Teknion and I understand that they're quite popular.

haha. Too bad us humans can't generate diddly squat in terms of energy, unless you want a tired, sweaty mess of cubicle farm destruction.

And here I am going for short walks around the office instead of calling people like a sucker....

I do have chronic back pain whenever I sit for more than two hours continuously in my office. I was totally fed up with trying all those useless piece of desks because none of them helped me to relieve my pain. I had to consult my physiotherapist in Mississauga to discuss and get good treatment for the neck pain relief. He also advised me, other than the sessions, it would be better to try something like stand up desks. Using it wisely can reduce back pain to an extent. Thanks for the post.

Nice first post! Is that your clinic?

So just a quick update:

I ended up getting the Varidesk about 2 weeks ago http://ca.varidesk.com/varidesk-pro-plus-48

So far im glad to report its been great. Its very easy to switch so i didnt get the special high chair, just the standing mat.

I stand about 60% of the day on a non gym day and about 40% when i go to gym at lunch.

You can definitely feel the difference and it totally wakes me up when i start to get tired, If i stand for too long, i feel a bit tired in my legs but from what i understand, you get use to that after a while.

All in all, i dont see myself ever switching back. Although i cant say definitely since i havnt been using it for a long period.
