Sportrack vs thule vs yakima

I always really wanted a rack for my car. Now that I picked up two kayaks I really need one. Any reason why I should not pick up a cheap sportrack? My car is old, paint is faded so I don't really care that much about fluff like anti scratch and wind noise. I just don't want to loose stuff I put on the rack... probably worth more than the car :)

Rack Attack on Laird avenue is a great place to shop. Thule makes quality stuff.

As always with questions like this, the answer is kijiji.

Always preferred the Thule feet over the Yakima. The bars are a wash. Sportrack is cheaper version of Thule. That said, I use VAG (Votec) now. Quality is top notch.

The noise can be a real issue.
Usually it is not bad, but some cars with some aftermarket racks make awful whistling noises.

So it may seem like it doesn't matter until you get in the highway and it sounds like a wailing banshee is on the roof.

When I was shopping for a roof rack I found out only the Yakima Q Tower will work with my car (Pont G6), approx. $250. Then I needed Q clips, approx. $100. Then I needed crossbars, approx. $100. Then I needed whatever to put on the rack (box, bike rack etc), approx. $200 to $600. I gave up.

I had a thule and Yakima at different times and both kept my skiis off the highway. I remember the quality being similar. I have seen better pricing in the US, it may be worth a drive south if your getting into the 6-700. range

Thule and yakima are very expensive for my car. That's why I am eying sportrack. I just want to know why it's viewed as "cheap" quality wise.

Buy cheap, secure with zip ties, dig up an old CD, and no one will be the wiser!

Toggle bolts through the roof and 2x4 bars ;)

I have the thule with the aeroblades. Works great, very quiet. I know a few people with the yakima whispbar setup on the same vehicle. Both work great. The yakima is more sleek, but at the expense of less roof clearance and less bar points for attachment (of tie straps, bungee cords, rope, whatever). The thule has wider bars too.

You get what you pay for. Plus resale is good as long as you don't have some rarely used platform (vehicle)

Awesome how GTAM was the #1 result on Google when I entered 'Sport Rack or THULE' into the search engine.

My turn for a thread revival!

My wife must need new glasses because she ripped off the YAKIMA box we have...I guess had now...on the roof and it's garbage now. Hoping that the property manager forgets about this incident (doubtful) and will go through cash instead of insurance (yet again...doubtful), but we'll wait and see.

Seeing these Sport Racks ($100-300), THULE ($300-700), and YAKIMA ($300-700) options abound on Kijiji.

Thoughts and recommendations? Also considering buying a roof top cage, and one of the soft bags instead.

This will not be used often, but for 1 - 2 trips / year. Don't need it to carry skiis / boards (yet), but that may be in the long term future.

It's for the Odyssey, as the smaller YAKIMA we had would've been great for the GTI...alas it was not meant to be.

These guys sell off their boxes at the end of the season at a good deal. Last time I was there they did but they also rented boats, so things may have changed.

They are also awesome to deal with for trailer and anything that they rent.

did you leave out part of the story. what did she rip it off on? what property manager are you talking about.
Don't feel so bad, my little accident backing into someones bumper couple weeks ago cost me $1300 for their rear bumper and paint. Lucky they didn't want to go through insurance and get a rental car and the whole bit. Could've been 3k.

Underground parking gone wrong.

She drove into an underground parking lot with a roof lower than she expected. I figured the damage wasn't so bad as she said 'no damage to car' when I spoke with her and the property manager.

Just got home. The YAKIMA box is a write-off, and I noticed it was damaged in the back...so I looked at the front hood and my heart dropped.

The whole box scratched the front of the hood, the top of the roof (thankfully sunroof didn't crack).

I just decided to walk away and calm down because had she gone forward it would've been just damage to the roof box. But reversing effectively ripped the box off the rack and sent it forward to the front of the car. It damaged the roof, damaged the hood...and I just hope that it won't be too expensive to fix as I'm not interested in driving with such scratches.

Well at least the dent came out…

The cracks and holes…not so much…
