Speed Limiter Debate

Saw a Global news segment, talking about an incident in Scarborough, where a couple of street-racers caused a collision, resulting the death of one teenager, and injuries to others.

An MP is proposing the introduction of speed limiters, set to 150 km/h, via a private member's bill.

IMO, this is the stupidest idea ever. First off, it doesn't stop people from doing 130 km/h in a 60 km/h zone (Global pointed this out). Second, the type of people that race their cars, do modifications to them. Removing the limiter is not hard.

Personally, I think all of the issues we experience on the road can be resolved by extensive driver training. Driving is a privilege, not a right. We need to look to places like Finland for ideas on how to train drivers to deal with the machines they are controlling. Expensive? Probably, but it'll be cheaper than incurring more preventable deaths and injuries. You gotta pay to play.

Speed limiters are a good idea. Do we really need to travel 50+ over the limit on community roads? Think, no more 50 over charges/license with its outrageous fines, impound fees, court appearances, loss of insurance coverage, etc. However, they should raise speed limits on highways to 120km/hr to even things out. Always taking, never giving!........................ Now there's also the issue of what to do when you want to "track" your vehicle?

My friend got run over and killed when two knobs were street racing down a residential street. I doubt they surpassed 100km/h in that 50km/h zone. This will solve nothing.

You will still get those charges, just not on the highway with your way of thinking. You could still go 50 over in 60,80 zones.

I say go for it. This bull**** law was crammed on all heavy trucks and although most trucks drive 95% outside of ontario where the speed limit is 120 and some places even 130 our trucks have to be limited to 105.
Enjoy

Oh and for the record this will do absolutely nothing to stop retards from crashing, just like 105 did nothing to prevent truck accidents, since once again majority of truck crashes were caused by cars.

This is just another bull***** attempt to LOOK like the govt is doing something, to justify their job and secure a RE-ELECTION comes next election...

:confused1: **barf**

Sorry to induce your vomiting but do you honestly believe you need to exceed the speed limit by 50 over on your daily commute?

This same MP introduces this same bill every session. It hasn't gone anywhere ever. The problem is not from the manufacturers but from the operators. If manufacturers limited the vehicles operators would simply defeat the device and modify their vehicle.

Sure make it illegal to defeat the device, I'm sure those people who drive over 150km/h are worried about a law about defeating a speed limiting device as well. The law already says it's illegal to drive that fast. Fuel economy regulations are already slowing our vehicles down except the higher end vehicles.

What we really need are higher speed limits and enforcement on reckless and dangerous operators and just smarter and more courteous operators

Quit talking common sense!! Can't you see there's a politician grandstanding at the moment?!? :)

Why should everyone suffer because a few dont follow the rules? What if i drive mt vette everyday to work but on the weekends i go to the race track. Why should i have to deal with this ******** when i follow the laws everyday and drive like a human being. There are speed limits in place and at 50 over you loose your license. Do we really need more laws?

With your logic lets ban knives because some people might stab others. Forget the fact that its illegal to stab someone or kill them, one law isnt enough, we need more.

Nothing like two trucks with their speeds matched and one trying to pass the other on a long stretch of four lane. It would be illegal if two cagers did it.

+1 I mentioned this scenario when they introduced that truck speed limit and I think people thought I was nutz.. It's brutal on the Autobahn..rolling traffic jam..

You should see the road rage this causes. Ive seen people passing trucks on the shoulder on 401 on the stretch from toronto to windsor.
Some get angry, pull in front of the truck and slam on their brakes which makes me lol every time cause its their funeral they're setting up.

Never mind the countless studies that showed when theres a speed differential between cars and trucks accidents increase. In the states they're eliminating split speed limits for this reason and upping the limit to 80mph in some areas and in retarded ontario we're moving backwards

I was behind two transports, obviously with functioning limiters and it took 7 kilometers for truck A to pass truck B and return to the right lane. The potential road rage that this creates is not worth it. This is a perfect example of the law of diminishing returns. I swear politicians are hell bent on creating a safe society even if it kills us in the process.;)

Stupidity at its best, all the other driver had to do was slow down to 100km/h for 15 seconds and the other truck would have passed him. It amazes me how stupid the average person is, and these people are supposed to be professionals lol
I personally wouldnt want to be next to a tractor trailer side by side when one of his tires blows out and he comes flying into me...but hey, **** common sense i guess

I'll give you a few good reasons why the nannies shouldn't bring about this turboidea..

1) It raises the costs of car ownership for everyone by a few hundreds of dollars per motor vehicle
2) It doesn't do anything for traffic safety as a very small minority of fatalities happen at 150+ speeds
3) It would cost an arm and a leg + huge cost overruns to administer this - think long gun registry
4) "Street racing" speeds would be brought down to 20-30 over
5) It would kill our legitimate racing community as kids could not take their commuters to trackdays.. Our legitimate racing is close to dying anyway and doesn't need hostility from the law or people like you will lose that smug "take it to the track" attitude
6) Actual street racers would just defeat the technology anyway

One street racing death and "we gotta stop the carnage" I love our fiberal politicians (not that the rest are much better but the fiberals have a flair for drama).. Go campaign against bees or peanuts, ye dumb ****s
