Special Thanks to Ashley from Sturgess Cycle

I visited Sturgess Cycle for the first time today for the Honda Demo Ride...which (for me) was a complete disaster.

HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised by Ashley, the P/A person at Sturgess. She was nothing short of a consummate professional and although I live Downtown, and Sturgess isn't exactly next door, I think a few more of my dollars will end up being spent there :)

Thanks again for your help, Ashley!

Sturgess always seems to busy (4-5 customers in store) and takes way too long to checkout.

Details! Did you crash it?

If I didn't know any better, it seemed as though it was the Honda Demo Team's first ever Demo Ride. For example, the Demo Lead (before we even sat on our bikes) stated that it was ok for participants to pass each other...as long as it was safe. I've never been to ANY demo ride where they even suggested the possibility of passing.

Then, the Demo Lead said that they would be going faster than the speed limit...and more than just a by a little...and that if we get a ticket, it's on our head.

Then, the group took off and within 2 min of riding (not exaggerating here), we were split and the front half of the group (which I was part of), had to wait for about 15 minutes on the side of the road while the Demo Lead went off on a "Search and Rescue" mission. Then, we got split again...and the Demo Lead had to go on another "Search and Rescue" Mission.

SIDE NOTE: What I found surprising is I don't think the Demo Tail ever took the lead for the "Back Half" when the groups were split.

Then, the front half of the group got completely split from the back half, and the front half got lost in Hamilton. Our lead had no idea which way he was going and had to make atleast 4 or 5 course corrections along the way.

...what was particularly scary, is how he was cutting across lanes and not waiting for our group (just the front half at this point) to be tight before progressing through a yield (thus splitting the "front half" into 2 groups). Heck, at one point, he got caught on a red-turning-to-green light unprepared as he was checking his smartphone (I'm assuming, he was looking at a map to find his way around).

But, I should also say that I spoke with a few other participants who had gone on rides prior to my time, and they said everything went smooth.

This was probably "one in a million" demo ride...but, it was my first ever Demo Ride with Honda, and will certainly be my last.

Never went to any demo at Sturgess, but Honda demo at Ready Honda in Mississauga a couple of years ago was very well organized, pretty much as well as any other demo I've been to.

I have no doubts they run a good outfit, and that's why I ended my post suggesting that my experience was probably an aberration. Nevertheless, that thought doesn't take the sour taste away from my mouth...atleast, not quite yet ;-)

I can't see how a demo group ride could be successful in that area of Hamilton, no fault of Sturgess or organizers, it's just a tough spot, especially with all those one way dead ends.

I think I got there just about when the lead pack of the split group got back. For the 3 rides I went on, it was almost gaurenteed to be split up either turning left onto King (which you then had to get 3 lanes over to make a right), or at the Dundurn/York lights. But the lead just slowed down or pulled over if it was safe, and then we carried on. Then again I think by that point most people had done the route and knew it anyways.

From the speech I heard, he said don't pass while at speed, but when stopped at lights, you could ask to move ahead of the guy in front of you.
