They're MVPs (Minimal Viable Products.)

In reality, they're also feeding all your data into a hive for some good ol' big data crunch in order for machine learning to learn when to respond, what to respond with, and how your voice sounds (every single person that has a smart device is doing this already.)

Over time, this will result in a better experience where the machines will tell you what you need, and when you need it.

...does this sound freaky to anyone? lol
