So that's how they get the turbine blades to the site.

I'm not sure what's going on there, but driving through the midwest I did see a lot of this

I've seen lots being carried flat, I've never seen the stand up blade for windy roads. Frig me, it must be terrifying when that thing gets an erection. A slight puff of wind and over you go. I don't know how this even works. You have force being applied ~100 ft from the axis and your width to provide stability is only ~10' on each side of the axis. Sure you can do active things like leaning it into the wind a bit (or maybe rotating the blade to control lift?!?), but it wouldn't take much to get to an unrecoverable angle.

I am still surprised that someone hasn't setup shipping via blimp. It seems reasonably simple, tons of capacity, lots of range, ok speed (definitely faster than a truck for a super oversized load), not many obstacles to contend with, minimal infrastructure required etc.

I've never seen that happen in north america. Pretty sure they'd be more likely to build a road that one of the normal trucks could pass before they'd ever try that. In some spots it could literally be months before a perfect weather day would open up to even allow that without it blowing over inside the first 60 seconds.

Really who would want those wind power turbines in your backyard

Glad you like them, I'm sure there's many things you like

I don’t mind them. The are better looking than a hydro transmission corridor in a 1/2km wide clear cut.

Why do so many hicks hate the things?

Because they are in the neighbours field not theirs. There is a very strong correlation between people that get a piece of the pie and the absence of "wind turbine syndrome". If you arent getting any benefit, fought their installation and then have to see and hear them every day and put up with the flicker it's like twisting the knife and you get angry and/or ill from the stress.

I've seen plenty of those transports up this way as they were being transported to the wind farms north and west of Orangeville. While not a fan of the cost of the Green Energy initiative I do like the look of the wind turbines. Kind of hypnotic to look at a few dozen of them turning in unison. Many say they make a noise that is bothersome: I've stopped very close to them and listened for a while and really couldn't hear anything other than the sound of the wind.

Would you want one or Four or more in your backyard?

Sometimes it's better for ignorance to just stfu

How would you like a nuclear plant or a gas fired backup plant in your backyard? Because that's how our power is generated otherwise. But hey, I'm sure it only matters to the "poor souls" who have to live within sight of them I guess? IE, Pickering?

We have a bunch of wind turbines out here in the Bowmanville area. People screamed bloody murder about them when they were proposed, complaining that they would destroy property values, spook their horses, destroy crop land, and basically just ruin their entire lives. Oh, with the smattering of "they cause toxic vibrational waves for a 3km radius that will kill my houseplants and give me brain cancer" nonsense.

6 or 8 years later since they've been up and operating, and guess what? None of that happened. And people pretty much don't care anymore aside from a handful of "I know my brain cancer is coming any day now" crazies.

And honestly, I think they're pretty cool to look at when I ride or drive past them all the time.

my only fear is 25?? yrs from now the generator is fried and replacement is 10's of thousands and farmer Fred justs lets it sit. What do you do with a decommissioned windmill? convert to VRBO ?

There is no recycling plan for fiberglass yet.

They creep me out for some reason. Maybe its a War of the Worlds thing

Probably the same as old oil wells. Govt mandated bond to clean up site that will be an order of magnitude or two too small and as each farm is a separate corporation, they will just fold up and stick the public with more cost. Mcguinty should personally pay as he lit all that money on fire.
