So I'm moving to Meaford...

I got a house one street back off the main drag on the North end of town. It's close to work (11KM door to door) which is the only reason I chose there over Collingwood.

Pros... it's close to work and has a gas station a block away and a grocery store three blocks away.

It's much closer to my family in Guelph than Kingston (current base) is and that much closer to my GF in Bracebridge where my actual home is. Like 200 KM closer. I won't have to drive through the GTA to get to Guelph any more as well which I see as a big plus or use the 401 for that matter other than a few trips into Toronto to visit friends.

It's got a really good gun club with access to the base range so I can get my big guns on.

It's close to Blue Mountain so I can snowboard in the winter and Downhill (bike) in the summer.



Con's.... it's Meaford and I'm not big on hick towns having lived in Petawawa for nine years.

It's more "snow belt" than living south of the 401 and I'm getting sick of Canadian winter.

It's still not close enough for a commute so I'm still renting a house to live in through the week.

The place is 150 years old with no basement, no central air etc. Not a dump but not something I would buy. Cost of heating etc. TBD

I don't know anything about quality of cell service or internet. I know my phone works in the town but not so well on the base. No big.


Anyhow... to make this more than just some guys self serving boredom rant..... anyone live/d there, or own something there that has any insight into some of the above things and more importantly, are there good riding roads in that area?

Ones you would recommend for me to try out?

Try and get in touch with cheesy on this board. A few years ago there was a forum called sport bike junkies that were from Owen sound.
 
Sorry to hear that man... Seriously lol.

I actually LOVE Petawawa, aside from: The traffic in the morning or after work (if you people think the 401 is a gridlock, you've seen NOTHING). The only grocery store here actually kind of sucks (their "fresh" fruit selection is worse than the co-op in Purvunituk) and the male to female ratio is horrible, and if a girl is even half decent she has a list of guys chasing her.

Meaford cell service is spotty. I was there for a couple weeks in the spring on the base, on the higher pieces of land you can get a couple bars, but go in to a building and you're not getting anything, or once you're down a hill you're likely to not get any.

There has to be good riding in the area I would think

Med: Been dicking around on Google earth for a while. Some windy bits that I have flagged but until I actually see the road conditions I can't tell if they are good or not. I suppose the best reccee is the one you do yourself anyway. Probably going to be other riders there although LFCA TC is a skeleton crew for a base...

I never had interest in any of the Valley girls or girls I worked with while in Pet. We used to call it Petawawa hot which meant you wouldn't give her a second look in the city but there, it's like living in Alaska so anything is better than nothing :) (I think I've said this before) Always had a GF that lived a fair distance away from there.

Meaford is my last posting and I'm only going to extend my contract until someone really ****s me off, then I'm gone.

Sorry about your Luck D23. I have a cottage in Meaford (well, friend of the family access whenever I want, blah blah blah). The pizza place there New Orleans pizza. Thats some good stuff. As for stuff in the area, you're pretty much hosed. I can tell you where all the locals hang at the beach etc.

You're talking to the guy with a 5' "White Trash Racing" decal on his race trailer and as the main logo on my rad shrouds on my dirt bike, so I guess I fit in! I grew up in a small southern Ontario tobacco town, so I come by it honestly anyways.

Yep, an 8 in Pet is a 2 in Ottawa... Ottawa is about the closest you can date and find someone that hasn't been used up by some army dude. Every single girl I've met up here either has a kid, is massive, has no real job, no education, no drive, or a long list of past military hook ups. So to avoid being a baby daddy, having my bike collapse under her couch potato ***, and helping her with her rent, I either stay single or date far far away lol. Basically any girl that grew up here and becomes something gets out of here or they are scooped up really young since they have it way too easy to find someone.

If you ride dirt, I found a private track that looked really good on my way back from there, maybe 20 min from the base or so, plus MotoPark is just south of Owen Sound.
 
Yea, used to race Moto Park way back when. I may pick up a dirt bike depending on what I have for down time. Not sure what the tempo is there other than I am burning leave on this end (next two weeks) because I'm right into a course when I get there after my five gaining days to set up my house. That runs till Sept. SQ I guess....

Perhaps I'll make it a point to train these guys not to fall into the position you described with the pre-made family. My contribution to the forces lol.

All in all I'm not unhappy I'm moving there. Just have to deal with small town life again. I can always move to Collingwood next year if it's crap.

I'm sure I can find places to ride since some have already said they know/live there.
 
I feel for you man. I was considering putting Meaford as my top pick to be posted to. For the same reasons you state, it made sense.
The CDU there is just as you said, a skeleton crew.
My PA warned me that I would be dealing with ****** off reservists trying to fake injuries to get out of PT and copious amounts of PI on a daily basis.
Still, the idea hasn't vanished from thought entirely.
Let me know how you fair. I am interested to see if you make it .... or if you off yourself in the coming months. BEWARE THE TANK RUTS. I did my BMQ / SQ there over 1 summer and exercises here and there on weekends when I was a reservist. Honestly, I don't see how it can be that bad. Far worse places in butt F*** no where Canada.
 
Yeah Elise, don't go to Meaford if you can help it... With the way the crew is there for medics you're gonna be tasked out like a mofo from what I hear... However, it will be field work and clinic which is a good mix. I'm in the field all the time and get very little clinical time. So while I'm good at doing my own treatments and med plans, I suck at all the paper work and proper crap that goes on in the clinic. But, everywhere you go has advantages and disadvantages really... But avoid the isolated places if you can because then it's just a ****** go the entire time since you can never really get away from it.

I have a feeling D23 knows all about the tank ruts. I was talking to my amb driver about them on our way there during the last exercise, we got there at like 2 am in blackout, I had to piss so got out of my amb thinking I would hit level ground... Nope, right in to a knee deep tank rut and landed on my *** lol.
 
Yea I have helped run quite a few EX's for my current unit there. I work in RHQ TN Cell. It's our winter indoc location and we do two others Unit lvl's through the year.

In my day we didn't have SQ. You went from basic to Borden for Driver Wheel, then you went to your trade school and were taught LET (land environment training) by the same trade instructors. Not that digging a hole has changed in 1000000 years....

I'm going to be DSTAFF by the looks of it so, it's old **** I have been playing at for almost 20 years. Second nature.

Just going to have to get my yelling voice back in shape.

Yes, site is currently down right now, as owner was going through medical issues, and could no longer devote the time. There are still a lot of riders in the area, and lots of nice roads. We were actually through Meaford tonight on the bikes, and head that way often.

Shoot me a message once your settled, and we can get out, and show you around the area. Lots to see and do!

I've always had good times in Meaford. Owen sound....meh. Meaford is a nice place. I knew of a few people posted to the base, and the ones that lived in town were very happy. Better than a Q.
