So I think I'm ready to buy

Recently I've been doing a lot of shopping around online and looking for the starter bike I've been wanting, originally wanted a Ninja 250(Can I say that even though arushbhai's gone?) but decided a gs500f would be fine too. Had 1 day of dirtbiking, and finally took the safety course at Sheridan Brampton. Well, I found a couple private sales that were suitable except they were sold before I managed to meet the seller/place a deposit(I work 3-11, and am way too lazy during the mornings). I'm 19 so I've also been searching around all over for insurance rates, seems like the fact that TD renews everyone in feb/march makes them a decent choice to cut down immediate cost of everything combined.

Well I found one at GP Bikes, but didn't call them until Monday and found out they sold it on the Saturday :| . And there's another one at kahuna, 2008 gs500f with 30k km, the stickers seem peeled off which is fine, but 30k seems to be a lot for an '08.

I still plan on going out to look at it but I was wondering if anyone had any tips/comments on the bike, kahuna, or Todd(Salesman I spoke with on the phone). The link is here http://www.kahunapowersports.com/ne...K2011J9I39I15JAMQ3746R0&veh=62664&pov=2166407.

Well if you were looking at the 2005 GS500F for sale in Newmarket for $3800..I beat ya to it!

I used to ride in my late teens, early 20s, and then after 15+ years, decided to get back into it again when a friend thought she'd get a bike too. I find it's the perfect bike for getting back into it and fairly easy to handle. After not riding for all that time, I thought I'd have to go find some parking lot to practice in, but I've put 250+ km's on the bike in the last week putting around downtown Toronto, along the lakeshore, etc.

Fun bike, great on insurance.

Hahah I've been beaten to 3 or 4 this month, so I was prepared for that even when I posted the link. I'm more worried about whether what I'm getting is gonna be comparable to GP, or CWS. Hopefully not the latter.

You're too lazy as to find any time before 3pm to look at a bike. Beginner bikes move quick. You can't afford to be lazy when looking for a starter bike.
Yeah, I tend to get up around 11 and get around by Mississauga Transit :p, after the 4 that I noticed moving reaaally fast I think I'm about to actually put effort into it. There was even an 04 on the forum for 2900 that sold within the same day.

I also constantly look back at possibly a cbr125 just for the cheap cost and insurance, but I'm preferably looking for something that I can keep using for more than just one season. Being under 25.. er, under 20, kinda skyrockets insurance costs.

I wanted to, but I've had my eyes set on post-08 Ninjas and they always end up being 4k even for an 08. Seller's are firm on price, I've even seen an '09 for 5200.

I've seen a number of used 250Rs for above MSRP, which I don't understand. Why would anyone buy that instead of a new bike?

I wish I could sell my 09 250 for $4k.

Just keep looking, something will come up. You may have to push it to October/November though. Honestly, have a look at the SV650. After having my 250 for 2 seasons now, I really think the SV650 is the better bike to start on. Of course, at 19, definitely check insurance first.

Now 20, but last year was 19 - got a 09 GSF 500 from GP Bikes at the beginning of last September for $4000 OTD with 10,000km. Talk with Jeremy there, he is the best. They had it listed at $4399 + taxes, I told them $4000 OTD and no haggling, no arguing, no stress on price, they said ok. Saw it on a Thurday, paid Friday, picked up Saturday. It was September but I rode till the end of November.

I'd hold off, keep looking. Many will pop up.

Insurance was with Jevco, Im in Mississauga too and it was $2160 full. Clean license. I ended up getting my M2 at 18 but insurance was way to much so I held it for a year and then heard Jevco gives good rates as long as you had your license minimum 1 year (insured or not) so I went with them....speak with Roger (Easyway Insurance - Jevco)

Funniest thing, someone said on their kijiji post "Why pay the taxes when I've already done that for you?" on a 2011 250r Listed at 5500 or something. Bike had nothing modified on it, and was relatively brand new, but it was hilarious.

@S500K thanks for that response, now I really do want to hold off on insurance, but where I work compared to where I live is a bit of a hassle on transit and I tend to end up depending on my parents. I guess paying this much for commuting, convenience, and as a hobby is not the greatest of ideas I've had, but I kinda want to start breaking free soon lol.
I've gotten a quote of 4.1k for liability only, and a bit more expensive with TD, but I'd only be paying 35% of that if I start in aug because insurance ends in feb, I'd be able to hold off a couple months then because school is a lot more accessible by transit for me.

I guess my logic is a bit off because I'm blinded by impatience, and I really appreciate people saying hold off but I've been waiting since may :p Patience is a vritue and I for one am not virtuous at all.

I spoke to C(K?) Carl at GP and he said they'd have a ninja 500 coming in, I truly do have my eyes set on a suzuki and plan on keeping it for more than 2 seasons anyway. Of course in life not everything always goes according to plan but I'll live with that.

I held off for a year and a few months! Man did I see so many bikes I wanted but just had to pass on it because of the money. GP Bikes has a 08 GSF 500 in now, kinda pricey, send a seriose offer, that's what I did and I got it for a killer price. I think a 500 is the way to go (GSF or NINJA) because it was only a bit more then a 250 on insurance and I could get a little bit bigger, little bit more power and a little bit more stable bike for the highway. I thought about the 250 long and hard, and was going to go for a 2005 ninja 250 but then I saw the 08's come out and I just had to have one, but things got in the way and things didn't go as planned and eventually I waited and ended up with a 09 GSF 500.

Patients my friend, patients :happy3:

I'm 26, and I would never pay 4.1k for insurance. At 19, I don't think that's a financially sound decision. Either shop around, or wait.

Also, realize that these Ninja 250s selling for $5k+ are being sold by complete idiots. And the ones saying they've paid taxes for you? HAHAHAHAHA! You forget that the MTO will ask you how much you paid for the bike and charge you HST on that amount before you can register the bike. Of course, no one tells them the real value, but if you did, at $5500, you'd actually pay more taxes that the original owner did when he bought it brand new. You don't pay the taxes to a private seller.

Now, if you end up deciding to wait a year, I'm willing to commit my bike to you. It's a 2009 Ninja 250 with 26k on it right now. It will likely be closer to 35k by next year. You can buy it off me in April/May 2012. We can discuss price, but it'll be a damn sight cheaper than $4500. And it'll be well sorted and maintained too.

Like another poster mentioned I also suggest checking out the SV650. That's what I started on this year. I was looking at the gs500f and was going to get it but then decided on the SV. It may have 650cc's but the thing is not to powerful to handle. It's amazing with city traffic and wicked for commuting and still good for weekend road trips.

Yeah it's been officially decided to be a very bad decision to be paying so much for insurance at this point. And I may have to hold off for quite a while seeing as I still have 2 years of school adding to debt, and while there are going to co-op semesters where I am paid, that will have to go into textbooks and such anyways. I've constantly been looking at getting a bike so much that I was a bit blinded from priorities.

So at this current point in time, I guess I'll hold off for a year, possibly more. If anything I'll hunt around during the winter and maybe a good deal will pop up.
Oh as for the thing about 250s over 5k, there's one on the forum 2010 for 5.2k but I did not read if he had modified anything or such, it has 5.5k km on it too.

@s500k, the one on the site is sold, I did not ask how much it sold for, but they had 2 in stock, that one that's still on the site was in better condition and sold last saturday.

basically, thank you to everyone for pointers and suggestions, I guess I'll have to stick it out with transit for a bit longer.

He's currently 18, and even in a year at 19, insurance is rape up the a**. The sv650s is my next bike for next year, and yes totally agree for the starter out there whos a bit older who can get cheaper insurance the sv650's are the way to go.

Turning 20 this december, but anyway, when I've had my license for a year I'm sure most quotes will be slightly cheaper.

Co-op for school? You going to Waterloo? What for?
III wish, it's sheridan, and they do co-op placements for most of their 3 year courses for workplace experience, I'm in computer engineering at the moment.

Those years of skipping classes in high school came back to bite me :|.

Ha, thanks for the correction, yea, now I tell people going into highschool, pay attention and do good at least for grade 11 and 12. You'll thank me in a few years - I kinda listened, on track so far for school, all is well lol.
