Sikh helmet exemption

I've seen many riding that way with no helmet ... I thought it was law.

Laws? There are laws being enforced?

Short of the cash heavy, low hanging fruit ones there are so many variants and misunderstandings a slightly cautious driver can get away with just about anything.

Out of curiosity, does insurance charge people that don't wear helmets more money or would that be discrimination? Although a law that doesn't affect a group of people but does everyone else seems a little discriminative to begin with.

Insurance is an oddball in that they are allowed to use age and gender in setting prices.

If they charged more for non-helmeted riders it isn’t a religious issue, it’s injury related based on actuarial studies.

If religion isn’t factored in then why couldn’t anyone ride without a helmet by agreeing to pay the higher rate?

Could a right wing Christian that drinks wine at communion use that as an excuse for blowing above zero BAC while driving or riding with a M-1 or G-1?

In Manitoba a doctor’s note gets you an exception on medical grounds, another loophole. They hurt or cause claustrophobia.

IMO this is all special interest group BS. Riding is not a constitutional right so no one is having a right violated by mandatory safety rules.

Do you buy your popcorn bagged and ready to eat or pop your own?

I wouldnt be surprised if stats showed no helmet was cheaper. Dead people are much cheaper than those recovering from injuries.

The whole Sikh exemption deal was another Dougie smoke show. The Sikh religion does not specifically require the wearing of an elaborate turban, it requires respectful head covering. A doo rag underneath a helmet is quite acceptable. He caved to a small special interest group.
Maybe he should stuck with buck-a-beer, and stickers on gas pumps...

A few years ago when Michigan repealed it's helmet laws a study by Michigan's DOT came out with helmet statistics. In the end, helmet use makes virtually no difference. There were a few more dead people, a few less crippled people, but on the whole, there was no correlation indicating helmets were useful. I think the reason is, the people that would ride without a helmet are the same ones that ride with the useless beanies with DOT stickers on them, so the outcome in accidents is virtually identical. Secondly, the safer you feel, the dumber you behave. Anyone here try to get a knee/elbow down while NOT wearing leathers? Do you ride the same when you are by yourself as you do when your kid is on the back? Yes, there's no question a helmet can save your life, but would you put yourself in the same situation if you weren't wearing one?

Ask that question to the BikerBoyz and the other groups of squids - why do you think sport bike insurance is so expensive ?

Didn't he have trouble making the stickers stick?

The Sikh religion does not specifically require the wearing of an elaborate turban,
A turban is one of the Sikh's 7 "K"s, which makes it a religious observance. It doesn't have to be elaborate, but observant adult male Sikhs wear a turban. The religion says adult males must not cut their hair and cover their heads to remain modest.
Ontario LAW says you wear a helmet, OR if you're a Sikh, you can wear a turban while operating a motorcycle. The religion is satisfied if you cover your Sikh head with a dish cloth, Ontario law isn't.

Interesting. Thanks.

Funny story:
I was in Vancouver when Expo '86 was being built.
One day the Chinese crew rolls in, with their Bamboo hard hats.
NO NO NO says the Canadian unions. UNSAFE says the Canadian unions. STOP WORK says the Canadian unions.
Site shut down. Thousands of workers idle.
They send some bamboo hard hats off to be tested
Seems bamboo hard hat is as good as a plastic one for impact, but BETTER to handle penetration.
Everyone goes back to work, the Chinese with their bamboo hard hats.
A couple of days later the Chinese open some sea cans full of bamboo and start building scaffolding.
NO NO NO says the Canadian unions. UNSAFE says the Canadian unions. STOP WORK says the Canadian unions.
The site shut down till the bamboo scaffolding is tested to Canadian standards.
WELL GOOLLLLEEEE, it seems bamboo scaffolding is SAFER than the steel pipe scaffolding that we use (it bends, then snaps back into shape. Steel pipe bends and has no strength so it has to be dis-assembled and replaced. With bamboo you just tie more bamboo on if the bamboo is broken. When you drive into bamboo scaffolding with a fork lift, the elastic bamboo bends, then goes back to it's original shape. When you drive into steel scaffolding it bends, stays bent, and you have to replace it. There was more....).
OH
Everyone goes back to work
Look here come the Indians... that don't have hard hats, they have turbans.
Canadian unions say "what ever, get back to work. We're several weeks late on the job"
Well someone complained, they shut down the job site AGAIN as they tested turbans as hard hats.
WELL GOOLLLEEEE, except for the very top of their head a turban (where the turban is only a couple of layers thick) is as good as, or better than a plastic hard hat.

Some, not all, of the states that allow you to ride without a helmet REQUIRE a separate insurance policy on your head. I can't remember what state it was but they required a $10,000 policy. $10,000 ain't getting you much more than a band aid and a kiss on your booboo in a neuro department in the US.

It's low enough that you aren't getting the chopper. By the time the land ambulance gets you to care, your hospital bill may not be too big.

I saw a bill the other day at high three figures for ambulance to attend a vsa call and provide no treatment (person was dead). The family member that got the bill was very upset.
