Should I change the oil before winterizing? bike only has 1800km on it

Hey guys...I apologize if this is the wrong section but can you please let me know if its okay to leave the oil in my bike during winter storage or should I be changing it? the last oil change was done at 800 km and the bike now has 1800 km on it. When I got it serviced at Kahuna the guy told me to get the next oil change at 3000 km and that's why I am asking this here. Appreciate any advice.

Just leave it alone. And next time try the search button as this has been discussed 100 times over every season... There are stickey's for proper winterization, etc. and may God help
You if you post about flat spots on your tires and leaving the battery in the bike on a trickle charger...

Thanks C-Note...I am sorry about posting this.

why would you have to be sorry?

btw oil is 30 bucks, personally id change itbut its really up to you

I've got about 1000km since my last oil change, I use motul 5100, and I'm just going to wait till spring for the next change. 1000km on semi/full synthetic is nothing....

and I'm very meticulous on my maintenance...

Sounds good, just don't start/idle it during the winter.

There are many different thought camps on that. I agree, starting it for 5 minutes does more harm that good, but leaving it running up to operating temp, not only circulates oil, also allows any condensation in motor/ oil to burn off.

I work on my bike during the winter, and have never had a problem doing the above. But this topic has Been beaten to death many, many times lol

I think the general consensus here is that you cannot get the motor/oil up to the normal on-road operating temperature my merely idling it, regardless of how long you idle it. In theory, condensation burn off would not be as complete as a good road run.

Letting your bike idle that much is bad. Low oil pressure is part of the reason. When I did UOA on my oil after the winter it had dissolved fuel in it, dropped almost an entire viscosity grade! This was brand new oil I put in right before the winter. Started it probably 5 times in total, let it get fully up to temp (till the fans came on). I won't be wrecking perfectly good oil this year, no starting for me!

I think I might not have explained properly, I don't start it every 2 weeks or anything, merely stating that after I have done engine work, etc, I run her. Mostly for diagnostics. Otherwise she sits on her stands, with battery tender and such.

I don't start her to hear the sound of the pipe or anything lol.

and Jamie, you probably already know this and not trying to be a smartass, but if that much gas is breaking down in your oil, you might want to check your rings. From what I understand, only a minute bit if gas should ever make it into your oil?

jamie, did I meet you a few times at burrito boys?

Blackstone said you can get fuel in your oil from cold starts and excessive idling. I never had any fuel in my oil from any of the previous UOA's or any ones after that either, so I don't think it was a mechanical problem.

I've been to burrito boys a few times. I don't remember what I had for breakfast so I probably wouldn't remember you ;)

Paul always harps on me for hijacking threads! lol.

I think I will hold off on the oil change but should I top off the oil? I noticed the bike was very low on oil for some reason...the sight glass was below the low level. I was gonna get some oil and just top it off...would this be okay? Also guys should I be topping off the fluids or anything? like brake fluid?

You have to check your oil level when the bike is standing straight up (i.e. on the stands), not on the side stand. When the bike is on the side stand, your oil level will look like it's below minimum. If you're checking the oil level properly and it is below minimum, obviously top up oil to max level, just don't overfill.
