After many years of faithful service, the sound system finally crashed. I was running a battery tender+12v car battery+Pioneer car stereo+2@6"x9"+2@4" round speakers. There's got to be a better way.
Guy a Timmies was telling me about tiny speakers that sound like big speakers. Like the Bose stuff as seen on TV. I thought that was snake oil.
I need small, reasonably priced, CD and radio only system able to pump up the jam. Any ideas?;)

my last three sets have come from buy/sell pawn shop type stores. Garage , basement shop, backyard setup all used from pawn shop. They test them before they put them out for sale, I have a pioneer in the basement and yamaha in the garage and an Dennon in the backyard. It cost between 100-200 ea. for amp/cd/speakers.

I'd rather buy a decent used than a cheap new. Small speakers are good enough for my workspaces, I'm not looking for audiophile experience in the shop.

( if you were a true luddite you'd not have a cd player, you'd put a band in the corner and make them play :))

Mr. Call, thank you for your considered response. Unfortunately I'm averse to dragging used ***** home unless it's a motorcycle. I need something stout and simple with warranty so I can yell at somebody in event of smoke bomb.

how important is the CD to you? a lot of the newer mini-systems are excluding CDs in favour of ipod and aux inputs. I had a hard time finding one last November.

Very. I had a sense things were headed that way but was hoping something was out there in CD and radio only. Last November, huh? Darn. I guess I'll need to whip out the googler. Thx.

Now you got my thinking about it. I was also curious. I found this one:

Might be something worth considering.

Yamaha has a pretty good reputation for audio. I'd put them above Sony, and just below Denon quality wise.

I prefer finding outdated equipment for cheap and running a full system.
I use 4 bookshelf speakers (you can find them anywhere now cheap, pawn shop, garage sale, craigslist etc..), 25 disc pioneer cd player (seen them used for 25$ or less)
The important part is the amp/receiver, i got an old pioneer from the 70's, it sounds better and has cleaner power than most new stuff.
Total cost, less than 120$ and it kicks arse.

[h=1]Sony 100W Mini Hi-Fi Music System with iPod Dock, MHC-EC69I/C2, Refurbished[/h]
at Walmart on-line , on sale for $88.00. It has your warranty, free shipping and a CD player. savings of over $120.00.

Fair enough. I assumed OP was looking for a mini-system.

I believe you to be correct, from a car radio running off a battery tender most anything should be a quantum leap in sound quality. It's getting harder to find a boombox for sale since everybody stopped carrying it on the shoulder and decided to just put it in thier pocket......

What's an I pod Doc? I've a funny feeling what I want does not exist anymore in the same way modern motorcycles are going. More features, more systems, more crutches and still needing to meet a price point. Consequently everything gets cheesed down to throw away quality. No remote, I prefer knobs.
Guy at Timmies was blown away by Bose mini system sound quality. Am I hanging around with the wrong crowd?
$300-$400 amortized over 15 yrs. sounds pretty good, no pun intended.

Bose has a distinctive sound that some people think they like. They actually do a decent job for the size of the package, but don't be fooled, package size was put first and everything else after (including sound quality). I bet if you could listen to your old system and a bose system back to back, you would be amazed with how much better your old system was.

Another alternative for the shop (although I think they have removed the CD players too) is jobsite radios from the tool companies (dew alt/milwaukee/ridgid/makita). They don't sound great but they are durable (I have seen some so coated in paint and drywall mud it was hard to tell who made them) and fit in with the shop decor.

I know you don't want to go this way, but for decent sound on a limited budget another vote for used stuff. I could have picked up a marantz amp with pioneer bookshelf speakers and an 8" sub yesterday for <$50. Just stop by yard sales. Any pawn shops I have looked in have had ridiculous prices. They think 70% of the original retail price in 1980 is fair. Canuckaudiomart has tons of gear too.

IMO, for its size, i think Bose sounds good at low volumes. Once you add a little volume though, sound equalization goes out the window.

For that, I wouldn't buy Bose.
